Coping with Fever

It is possible to cope with fever easily with home remedies. Read about the common symptoms of fever, causes of fever and home remedies for coping with fever.

Fever is an elevation in temperature level of the body. This elevation normally happens when our immune system is trying to fight off bacteria and viruses which are capable of harming our bodies. Fever is one the most effective weapon in the human body’s fight against common diseases and infections.

Normal Body Temperature for Humans

Normal human body temperature ranges from 97 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit. However, these levels never remain constant throughout the day and can vary during the day itself. In some people the temperature levels may be low early in the morning and rise as the afternoon progresses. A temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit is considered to be a fever. In case it crosses over 102 degrees Fahrenheit in adults or 103 degrees Fahrenheit in children, it could be a major cause of serious concern.

Common Symptoms of Fever

Have a quick look at some of the common symptoms of fever.
  • High temperature
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Burning in the eyes
  • Lack of appetite
  • White coating on the tongue
  • Excessive saliva production
  • Nausea

Common Causes of Fever

Let us have a look at the common causes of fever.

  • An infection
  • External injury
  • Insect bite or
  • Food poisoning
  • A symptom of health ailments like bronchitis, pleurisy, tuberculosis, jaundice, malaria, measles or influenza.

Basically anything that disturbs the heat controlling mechanism of the body can cause fever.

Home Remedies for Treating Fever

Here are some of the home remedies for treating fever.

Warm Water and Lime Remedy -

Warm water approximately 100 ml combined with the juice of half a lime taken 3-4 times a day is useful to bring down body temperature.

Sandalwood Paste Remedy -

Applying a paste of sandalwood powder on the forehead is one of the ancient remedies for treating fever. However, you must ensure that sandalwood being used is of good quality. The sandalwood paste must be prepared by mixing a little water with sandalwood powder.

Cold Water Remedy -

In case of high fever ie; 102 degree Fahrenheit or above in adults (103 in children) by placing pieces of cloth soaked in cold water on the forehead, hands, arms and feet, fever can be brought down. The cloth must be thoroughly rinsed and regularly changed at intervals of a few minutes.

Turmeric Powder Remedy -

A decoction prepared by mixing half a teaspoon of turmeric powder, warm milk and a teaspoon honey taken twice a day is also known to provide relief from fever.

Tulsi or Holy Basil Remedy -

Tulsi or holy basil is one of the oldest remedies for treating common fever. For making use of those you must boil approximately 20 leaves of it in 2 cups of water and drink it. For making it tasty you can add honey while preparing the decoction.

Honey, Lime Juice and Ginger Remedy -

A mixture made by combining 1 tablespoon of honey, a few drops of lime juice and ginger juice is very effective for treating fever.

A Word of Caution

While making use of any remedies - home or otherwise for treating fever you must be cautious and ensure to monitor temperature levels closely at regular intervals of say 4 hours till such time that the fever subsides completely.

It is also important to drink plenty of fluids to guard against dehydration. In case you wish to have a bath, a lukewarm bath or sponge bath can help in bringing down high fever. However, abstain from having a bath in cold water or ice. Finally, ensure that you take an adequate bed rest as moving around can raise body temperature and worsen your already existing fever.

very informative article. the home remedies are very good and they are better than giving chemicals which usually harm the immune system in the long run.

Fever is good for body as it helps increase the body temperature which helps in killing the germs. Very high temperatures are not good.
