Preschooler's Growth and Development (3 Years, 9-Month-Old)

Good observation skills help in keeping track of social and emotional developments of preschoolers. Learn how as a parent, you can help in preschooler’s development.

While you can easily monitor the development of your preschooler, her emotional and social development may not be very evident always. There are in fact not many ways to keep track of her social and emotional developments.
As a parent, it is important you encourage her to observe things around her. Her observation skills shall help her develop emotionally as well as socially. There are so many ways you can support her growth and development!

Preschooler’s Emotional and Social Developments

Her emotional and social developments shall be faster at this point of time. Here is what you can expect from her now:
  • She shall be able to state her age and gender slowly now.
  • She may be able to tell her name and name of her parents as well.
  • She will love participating in household works.
  • She will be able to adjust to new situations without your presence as well.
  • She shall slowly be able to understand the feelings and moods of others.
  • She will not act out physically and rather speak out her angry words.

Parents Role in Preschooler’s Developments

Now that you are aware of some of the social and emotional developments that you can expect in her, here we shall take a look at what you can do to enforce them.
  1. You need to offer a secured environment at home.
  2. You must respect her independence. Make sure to praise her as she tries to brush, dress herself or feed her pet.
  3. Help her say the first and the last name. You can also encourage her to learn the home address.
  4. She must come in touch with children of her age regularly. It is necessary she sees others playing and listening to what they say. This shall be a wonderful way to learn to cooperate, retain friends and build new relations.
  5. You may also participate in some games to help her get involved. This shall help her learn to accept victory and loses as well.

Role of the Preschools and Nurseries

Your child enters a completely new world when she starts going to the >preschool. This is the place that is filled with informal and structured learning. She shall learn the high values of cooperation and good behaviour here. Here is how you can keep a track of her progress and developments:
You can enquire about the kind of learning opportunities your child shall get at school. You can also ask about the kind of developments you can expect from the play and activity sessions.
You can ask about the behaviours and social skills that your child shall require making a smooth transition to the kindergarten.
You must encourage your preschooler to talk about school and the activities she love the most. You can ask her to list activities that are most challenging and interesting to her.

When Parents Should be Concerned?

There is nothing that can be termed as "normal" when it comes to the social and emotional developments of the preschoolers. However, you can consider the time blocks and be concerned if her developments are lagging behind always. Here are some of the instances when you must be concerned:
  • If you find it difficult for her to maintain a positive social status.
  • If you find it difficult for her to maintain her self control.
  • If you find her bullying others or throwing very frequent tantrums.
  • If you find her sad unusually or separated from others.
  • If you find her in extreme anxiety when you are not around.
Make sure to discuss your concerns with her teachers and doctor on time. You shall surely be benefitted by the professional advice.
