Coping with Diabetes

Obesity, stress and tension are main causes of diabetes. With the increase in obesity, stress and tension which are part and parcel of our modern lifestyle, the number of people coping with diabetes has also increased. Read on to find about the symptoms of diabetes, types of diabetes and tips for preventing diabetes.

There has been rapid increase in the number of people suffering from diabetes in the recent past and the enhancement simply seems to continue. Doctors are finding it very difficult to cope with the disease and have only medications to help people keep their blood sugar level under control. There is nothing, according to medical science, to prevent or avoid diabetes in women, men and even children.

However, yoga and pranayamas along with natural remedies are there that have helped millions of people stay away from various diseases including diabetes and high blood pressure. One of the facts about diabetes is that there are many people who are suffering from these diseases especially women and they are not aware of that. This is because there are no apparent symptoms of diabetes and a layman will not be able to detect easily.

What is Diabetes?

In simple medical language diabetes is a disease in which sugar level in blood increases. But how it happens? In normal course when we eat food it gets broken down into potential energy and this is absorbed and distributed evenly in our body through blood. This gives energy to our body eventually. When a person is diabetic, the food that breaks down and the glucose that is released does not get absorbed by cells. This is because the insulin that helps in the absorption is either absent or unable to work properly in the diabetic person. This results in increase of sugar level in the blood and hence the person is diagnosed with diabetes.

Symptoms of Diabetes

The person suffering from diabetes may experience following symptoms.

  • Feels thirsty most often
  • Feels hungry all of a sudden and need something immediately
  • Weight loss or sometimes weight gain too
  • Feels fatigue and exhausted
  • Frequent urination
  • Blurred vision
  • Wounds do not heal up easily

Types of Diabetes

  1. Type 1 Diabetes – This is when the insulin in the pancreas stop working and the person is unable to produce any insulin at all.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes – This is when the cells become resistant to insulin.
  3. Gestational Diabetes – This type of diabetes occurs in the later period of pregnancy when the mother’s hormone obstructs the proper utilisation of insulin.

No matter what type of diabetes the person is suffering from, if left untreated, it can lead to severe problems like eye disorder, kidney damage and even nerve damage too.

Tips for Preventing Diabetes

Here are some tips for preventing diabetes.

  • The first step is to get your blood test done. This will give you the right results. Even if you have not yet got results indicating any increase in the level of blood sugar, you should take precautionary measures especially if you have a family history of diabetes.
  • Consult your doctor if the results show any indication of diabetes.
  • Make a diet plan. If possible take suggestion from dietician. Try to include green leafy vegetables, salad, sprouts, low fat yogurt and complex carbohydrate food.
  • Exercise regularly. You can take up yoga exercises and pranayamas to prevent and avoid diabetes. Pranayamas like bhastrika, kapala bhati, anulom vilom, agnisaar, bahya and udgeet are helpful in preventing diabetes. Yoga asanas like mandook asana, suryanamaskar and many more are going to help you a lot.

If you pay attention to diet and perform yoga exercises along with pranayamas regularly, you will be able to avoid diabetes and the complications related to the disease.
