Summers are for some fun time in the sun, but you need to be careful as well if you want to enjoy the summers well and stay healthy. The sultry heat and high humidity levels can spell sickness if we are not doing the right actions. It can get a tricky, as sitting still will not help you, neither will over activity, as it will lead to exhaustion faster, very little activity will cause uneasiness. So just take the precautions recommended and engage in just the right amount of activity.

Summers are when all the heat related sicknesses strike, and if you are not braced up, they strike hard. This is primarily because, during the summer months, the body is less equipped in regulating its natural temperature, and tries to cool itself through sweating. So a natural strain on the system is already there.

The Common Summer Illnesses Include

Let us have a look at the common summer illnesses.

Heat Cramps

Those who sweat a lot and engaged in strenuous activity are more likely to suffer from this illness. The salt levels plummet and result in muscle cramps and spasms in the hands, arms, abdomen and legs.

Heat Exhaustion

The loss of water through excessive sweating causes this. The skin becomes clammy, one experiences extreme fatigue.

Heat Oedema

Heat oedema mostly happens if the person is not acclimatised to the hot weather. The face turns red and the person sweats profusely and the hands, legs and feet swell.

Heat Syncope

Heat syncope involves trails of dizziness and fainting caused by dehydration while working in the sun.

Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is high medical emergency when the body temperature soars to 104 degrees. Symptoms are throbbing headache, dizziness, chills and hallucinations.

First Action

For any heat related illness, it is vital that you cool the body down as quickly as possible. The victim must be moved to a cool shaded environment. Give water orally to hydrate the system fast and call for medical attention as required.

Preventing Summer Illnesses

Stay Well Hydrated

It is very important to keep the body hydrated as much as possible. 8 to 10 glasses of water regularly is a must and if one is physically active, he must ensure that he takes in 2 to 4 cups of cool fluids every hour. Make sure that the fluids you take in are non-alcoholic and caffeine free, else they will do no help to your system, rather erode it further.

Wear Light Clothing

Since the natural exhaustion is high during the summers, you need to make your body feel comfortable and cool as much as possible. Light cotton and linen are materials that aid heat dissipation and faster evaporation of the sweat.

Wear Sunblocks

It is important to apply sunscreens and sunblocks whenever you are stepping out in the sun to protect your skin from the harsh rays of the sun. Make sure that you are using those with high sun protecting factor or SPF values so that the harmful UV rays are kept at bay.

Limit Outdoor Activities

If you work outdoors try to ensure that you avoid the sun when it is scorching the earth during the late morning to late afternoon.

Enhance Air Circulation Indoors

During summers make sure that you are using an air cooler or air conditioner or an electric fan when you are indoors. It is important to keep the circulation active in order to cool down the environment as much as possible.
Make good use of the hats, umbrellas and sun glasses when you are stepping out in the sun. It is always advisable to protect the head from the beating rays of the summer sun as it tends to induce fatigue and dizziness very fast. The brain is the heat controller of your body, so keep that head under the shade. Invest in a pair of good sunglasses to effectively protect those eyes from the harsh rays of the sun. They can cause vision problems and cause dizziness as well.
