Health Benefits of Figs (Anjeer)

Fig or Anjeer is one of the fruits high in vitamin, mineral and fiber content. Fig also contains lot of healing properties. Read on to know more about the health benefits or healing properties of fig or Anjeer. 

Figs or Anjeer as it is popularly referred to in India originated in Arabia. It grows well in areas with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Although considered a fruit, it is actually an inverted flower and its seeds are the real fruit. It is a nutrient rich fruit which can be consumed in fresh or dried from.           

Figs are sweet and soft. A paste of figs can be easily used as a healthy substitute for sugar. Figs can be consumed as a fruit or it can be used to make pies, pudding, cakes, jam, jellies and preserves.           

Figs are rich source of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Therefore, they are considered nutritious and healthy. Figs are rich in Vitamin A, B1, B2, Calcium, Iron, Phosphorus, Manganese, Sodium and Potassium.

In addition to the fruit, even fig leaves are edible and have numerous health benefits. Research has indicated that the leaves may in fact have more health benefits than the fruit itself. The purpose of this article is to highlight some of the health benefits and healing properties of figs or Anjeer.

Health Benefits of Figs (Anjeer) Include

Good Source of Iron - Dried figs can be used to for meeting our iron requirement. Iron is required by our body for transporting oxygen in the blood. Reduced iron intake will result in reduced delivery of oxygen to our cells. This in turn can make us feel tired, drained out and more susceptible to infection.

Sexual Power - Figs have been used since ancient times as a cure for sexual weakness. Soaking figs in milk overnight and consuming it in the morning is said to be useful for enhancing sexual powers.

Strengthen Bones - Figs are rich source calcium which helps in strengthening the bones.

Good for Diabetic Patients: Fig leaves and fruit are both healthy snack options for diabetics. Fig leaves reduce the amount of insulin needed by diabetic patients who are insulin dependent. Being rich in potassium this fruit is useful to control blood sugar levels.

Lowers Blood Pressure - Consuming dried figs is very can meet our daily potassium requirements and help lower the blood pressure. Potassium is a mineral which helps to maintain fluid balance in the body. Increasing the daily intake of potassium can help to reduce the effects of sodium thereby lowering the blood pressure.

Healing Properties of Fig (Anjeer)

Lower Cholesterol - Figs contain Pectin which is a soluble fiber. When we consume soluble fiber it helps to remove cholesterol from the system and flushes it out of the body.

Colon Cancer - Fiber present in figs is useful to flush out all the harmful toxins from the body including cancer causing substances. Regular bowel movement and flushing out of toxins can prevent colon cancer.

Prevents Constipation - Figs are rich in fibre which ensures healthy bowel movement thereby preventing constipation.

Coronary Heart Disease - Dried figs contain phenol, Omega-3 and Omega-6 which are fatty acids highly effective in significantly reducing the risk of coronary heart disease.

Prevention of Hypertension - Figs are high in potassium and at the same time low in sodium which is very useful to prevent hypertension.

Although the health benefits of figs are numerous it must be consumed in moderate quantities only. Excessive consumption of figs can cause diarrhea. Also dried fits are rich in sugar capable of causing tooth decay.

Do dried figs have the same nutritive value as fresh figs? fresh figs is not available throughout the year so the only option left is dried figs.

Figs should be taken with care. They are good source of iron so good for curing anemia but they are also high in sugars so diabetics should beware.
