Preschooler's Growth and Development (5 Years, 4-Month-Old)

The new found skills of preschooler at this stage will be ability to read and writing skills. Aid in the learning and development of your preschooler by encouraging her writing and reading abilities.
Your child is now going through a very exciting phase of development. She is now entering the school and shall become more and more aware of the rules in a class room. This is the time when she is learning more about the world around her and developing more confidence from the new found skills.

Writing and Reading Abilities

She can now recognise the alphabets. She can write the alphabets and is also gaining familiarity with the similar sounds. Ability to read at this age tends to vary. Some of the kids start learning now, while others may have already started reading the 1st grade books.
She can now recollect the story you narrated last night. You can expect her to understand the difference between the beginning, middle and the end of a story.

Your Kid with Math and Numbers

Numbers do make sense to him now. She is fast learning to count as well. She can now understand that every number represents something.
You can now expect her to learn different shapes like a circle, square and a rectangle. She will be able to distinguish a three dimensional object from a 2 dimensional one.

Developing Different Concepts

Your little one is now a grown up enough to understand difference between "under", "over", "small", "big", "today" and "yesterday".
Your Imaginative Little One
As she gets more imaginative with time, you can find her engaging more in the make believe games. Do not worry if you find her making stories and lying sometimes. It is just those imaginative stories going rounds in her head.

Games and Songs

Have you noticed her interest in songs and dance? You may find her repeating the same dance steps with her favourite tunes. With time she shall also learn different new moves. The same is with songs, if she loves the sweet notes of a song, you may find her humming them throughout the day.
You can also expect her to understand the punch lines and crack jokes. Make sure the jokes are age appropriate. When she is participating in a game, she shall always want to win. It is normal if she throws tantrums or gets irritated upon losing.

Friends and their Importance

Her friends shall be very important to her now. She may develop close connections and share everything with her best friend. You should be careful about the downsides, as it might lead to cliques and there might be ostracism. You thus need to be careful about the dynamics within playgroups and the classrooms.

Understanding Right and Wrong

You can expect some moral development now. She shall understand the difference between the good and the bad, wrong and the right. He may also like to please you with his good manners and behaviours. Do not be surprised to see her asserting her own preferences now.
Today’s kids are smarter than before. They love interacting and going out in the open to make new friends. Even if you find her slow when it comes to warming up with another kid, she shall be more interactive with time. She shall get more social, as she starts going to the school.
In case you feel she is lagging behind in some areas, you can always have a talk with your doctor. She shall diagnose your child closely and suggest the right solutions. If necessary, you may be suggested a specialist to help her with normal growth and development. Early intervention often helps by offering necessary support. This shall also ensure she does not lag behind in other areas of learning and development.
Moms tell us what new things your child discovered at this age. We would love to listen to your experiences.

What developments are expected in 5 years, 4-month-old child? How to encourage reading and writing skills in a preschooler? Which activities aid in the growth and development of a preschooler? Discuss here.
