Health Benefits of Onions and Garlic

The health benefits of onion and garlic can be obtained by consuming them in either raw or cooked form. Learn about the powerful healing properties of onion and garlic.

Onion and garlic are part of the staple diet in a number of Asian countries because of its excellent nutritional properties. Both of these foods have strong medicinal properties which are very useful to protect us against a variety of ailments. These are used to treat a whole lot of bacterial infections and heal wounds faster.

Scientific research has indicated that consuming onions and garlic on a daily basis is very useful to provide optimum health. Despite having a pungent and sulphurous odor, these foods are really worthy of being consumed every single day. These foods are full of chemicals and provide protection against a number of infections, diseases and illnesses. These are particularly useful in preventing cardiovascular diseases, respiratory concerns, diabetes, and a variety of cancers.

Garlic – Nutritional Facts and Health Benefits

A number of research studies have indicated that a diet rich in garlic is useful to lower the total cholesterol level in an individual, including the bad cholesterol or LDL. At the same time it increases the good HDL cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Garlic is known to produce a good amount of cells in the blood which are considered as "natural killers". These can help to combat different infections as they have many antibacterial and antifungal properties. Garlic has the ability to lower blood pressure and prevent heart diseases. It prevents strokes and heart attacks by reducing the risk of developing blood clots.

Garlic is capable of fighting a number of bacteria and viruses and hence guards the body against infections and is particularly useful to lower the risk of stomach cancer. Because of rich medicinal properties it is best to consume garlic in raw form. Cooking garlic, especially for a long time or at a very high temperature can destroy some of the compounds known as ‘Allicin’ in it. Allicin is the key component of garlic which makes it a great natural healer.

Onion - Nutritional Values and Health Benefits

Health benefits of onion are primarily due to the sulphur compounds contents and quercetin in traces of essential oils. These are very effective antioxidants which help in neutralising the free radicals present in the human body. Mineral components such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, selenium and phosphorus are found in onion. The antibacterial properties combined with its anti-fungal uses have made it a common ingredient used in most of our kitchens.

Similar to garlic, onions also help to increase the HDL cholesterol in the blood, especially when consumed in raw form. Onions also help to reduce bad cholesterol or LDL in the blood and improve the ability of the blood to dissolve blood clots. Onions are very useful to reduce the risk of developing diabetes and help fight off bacteria which are responsible for causing many infections in the human body.

Onions are also very effective in reducing the risk of many types of cancers. A compound known as quercetin found in onions is extremely powerful to fight cancer and is also an excellent antioxidant.

Conclusion

Since early civilization garlic and onion have been used extensively by mankind because of powerful healing properties of these vegetables. Scientific research has now clearly proven the benefits of daily intake of garlic and onions. Both of these pungent vegetarian natural foods contain chemicals which can protect the body from a number of major and minor illnesses. Some of these include :

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Respiratory problems
  • Infections
  • Cancers

You can easily boost your health by eating garlic and onions on a regular basis preferably in raw form. You can use these for flavoring, crush, mince or chop them and include in a number of day-to-day items that you cook and consume.
