Health Benefits of Watermelons

Watermelon with its deep red pulp has thirst quenching and healing qualities and is a rich source of potassium. Find out the health benefits of watermelons.

Summers and watermelons go hand in hand. With 92% water content, watermelon is one of the most powerful antioxidants gifted by nature. It is not only effective in preventing dehydration, but a rich source of vitamin A and C, thereby protecting us from a host of diseases. A fruit that is as pleasingly thirst quenching and crunchy at the same time, watermelons are found aplenty throughout the world and best varieties are available during summers, when it the most desired fruit.

Nutritional Properties of Watermelons

Here are some of the nutritional values and the health benefits of watermelon:

It Is High In Lycopene

The deep red watermelon pulp is very high in lycopene content, which is even higher than the reddest of tomatoes. This red pigment is also present in ripe papayas, apricots and the pink grapes; lycopene being a very vital antioxidant for the body. It can effectively reduce the risk of the development of breast, colon, and lung, endometrial and prostrate cancers. Lycopene neutralizes the singlet oxygen radicals in a better manner compared to the vitamin E and beta-carotene antioxidants.

It Is a Diuretic

Watermelon is very beneficial for people with kidney disorders. Its inherent diuretic properties aid in the homeopathic treatment especially in the earlier days when dialysis was not an option.

It Has an Effect Similar to Viagra

There is an element called citrulline in watermelon that triggers the production of a certain compound that induces relaxation of the blood vessels of the body. This feeling is akin to that of when one takes Viagra.

It Is a Rich Source of Potassium

This makes watermelon to cause a marked improvement in the nerve and muscle function of the body. This characteristic also helps in easing out the inflammatory conditions that can potentially lead to a host of health issues like asthma, diabetes, athrosclerosis, and arthritis and colon cancer.

The other benefits of watermelon include the presence of electrolytes sodium and potassium that we lose through sweating during the summer months. Then the multitude of vitamin B variants equips the body to produce more energy. Then the presence of thiamine and magnesium is helpful in protecting the body from a host of other diseases. Further, being almost fat-free, it aids in energy production and also simultaneously acts as a protection against macular degeneration.

It is interesting to note that some people consider watermelon to be a fruit, while some believe it is a vegetable. Scientifically it is associated with the pumpkin family and the method of cultivating it is akin to that of vegetable growing standards. Originally it hails from the lands of South Africa as per the research studies and like tomato and pumpkin “it is the ripened ovary of a seed plant and its contents, which, botanically speaking, make it a fruit.” Whatever the case, watermelons are sure a soothing way to beat the sultry summers, cool the system and enrich the body with its rich nutritious content.
