Dealing with temper tantrums of children is one of the aspects of parenting. So, parents must accept this fact and handle such situations in constructive ways. Here are 10 smart ways which parents can follow to deal with temper tantrums of children.

Tantrums are a part of growing-up of children. All parents have to undergo a phase were they have to deal with the temper tantrums of their children. It is natural for parents to give-in to their demands initially. But, if throwing tantrums becomes a habit, it gets difficult for parents to keep their calm. In such situations most of the parents get hyper and adhere to negative parenting techniques like spanking or yelling. However, this is not the right way to deal with children. To nip this habit in bud, parents need to respond with love. Below mentioned are 10 smart ways to deal with temper tantrums easily.

1. Being Prepared

If throwing tantrums has become a habit of child, it is imperative for parents to be prepared. Parents should analyse and make a note of the situations where children are likely to throw tantrums. If such situations are going to arise, parents should think of the ways to avoid such situations or ways to deal with such situations well in advance.

2. Keeping Children Happy

Happy and satisfied children are less likely throw tantrums. So, it is best to maintain happy and cheerful atmosphere at home. It is also necessary to ensure that they are in a happy mood while going on an outing or while going to school etc.

3. Hugging

At an outburst of a tantrum, a tight and a loving hug of parent can work wonders.  A parental hug can develop positive and calming emotions in a child. It can help the child to get control of emotions instantly and get back to normal and happy mode easily.

4. Laughing

Laughter is a best medicine for every parenting problem. Cracking a simple joke, when child is in a bad mood, can really help the child to unwind. Laughing away child’s tantrums can be a great way to bond with the child as well as create wonderful memories.

5. Setting Expectations

Parents should be clear about what they expect so that children are well aware of how to behave in different situations. For example, they should know about the expected behaviour while visiting someone, when guests arrive, while going on an outing etc. In such cases, tantrum outbursts are rare and children develop a sense of how to behave.

6. Offering a Glass of Water

When a child starts throwing tantrums, offering a glass of water can be a great way to allow the child to take a break and relax. After having a sip of water or two, child can be encouraged to express anger and frustration in a more constructive way instead of throwing tantrums.

7. Diverting Attention

Small children can be easily distracted. For, example, at an outburst of tantrum, talking to the child about something nice like “you are looking very pretty today” or “ your smile is beautiful and it always makes my day” or any other constructive statement that can help to divert attention of child can surely help to tame the tantrums.

8. Deep Breathing

When a child starts throwing tantrums, a parent can ask the child to pause and take few deep breaths. To encourage the child even the parent can start deep breathing exercise after instructing the child. Deep breathing is a great way to shun away the negative emotions and prevent child from throwing tantrums.

9. Showing Empathy

Empathy is one of the powerful tools for dealing with temper tantrums in children. By showing empathy, parents can validate the emotions of the child. When parents exhibit empathic behaviour, children get the message that their parents understand their feelings. They get an opportunity to express themselves in a better ways instead of throwing tantrums.

10. Praising Good Behaviour

When children exhibit good behaviour, parents should always praise them. Praising good behaviour can minimise the chances of tantrums in them. On the other hand, if at all children throw tantrums, parents must remind them of how well behaved they are at all occasions and throwing tantrums is not their personality trait. Such affirmations can remind them of their identity as well behaved children and they will control their tantrums on their own.

Parents can pick any of the above mentioned ways depending upon the situation and their convenience to deal with the tantrums. Being strict and reprimanding children can just worsen the situation and develop negative feeling in them. So, the focus of parents should be to be calm, to respond with love and to be positive when they have to deal with temper tantrums of children.
