Tips for Working Mothers to Manage Children

With both the parents working, hectic work schedules are a part of life. All this takes a toll on the overall development of the child. Is there a solution to prevent all this? Read on to get some ideas on how to manage with hectic schedules.

Last week I was in a very important meeting. My child kept calling me through the meeting sobbing about a birthday party that he was missing. He wanted to go for the party, but I was stuck at work and had no way of sending him. At the time, I scolded him for being so insistent. But later, I felt very bad about it. What could I have done better?

This is one of the worst things about going to office for working mothers. To be stuck at work when there is a sick or crying child at home is most heart breaking. But you have got to do what you have got to do! And what you have got to do girl, is plan ahead! Read on to know how to deal with such situations.

Make a Calendar with Child’s Schedule

Do keep a calendar with your schedule and your child’s programmes on it. When there are events for which he has to go out, plan on how you will drop him, fetch him and supervise him whilst at the event. Either you need to be here yourself, or get help to do this for you.

Get a Helping Hand in Your Absence

If you have a job in which you cannot predict your availability, with sudden meetings or trips out of town, then it is a good idea to have a plan B. Ideally you could request your husband to take over. In situations such as the one you have mentioned you could request a fellow mother to take your child to the party and bring him back.

There is nothing quite like another mother to look after your child and it is likely she will be more responsible than anyone else. If you have a trusted maid then you can send her with your child. So she can supervise your child at the party, relieving the other mother of the job of feeding your child.

If you have a relative or a friend that you trust and your child is happy with, you could try to send your child with them instead. This requires advance notice as people are not sitting around at home waiting for your call. It is always better to plan ahead of time.

Appointing a Maid and a Driver

A lot of mothers send their children to classes and birthday parties with their trained maids in their cars with their trusted drivers. You may wish to think about this option. However, you need to have absolute confidence in your maid and your driver. You have to instruct them on what you expect from them, especially complete attentiveness from the maid and careful driving from the driver. The driver must always bring the car to where it is required so that your maid is not wandering the streets looking for him. A cell phone on one or maybe both of them might prove helpful.

In all such cases, the person to whom you have entrusted your child must have your cell number and have instructions on what to do in case of an accident or an emergency. Your child should also be instructed on how to behave, he must not run off and should stay close to his attendant. He must also behave himself so that this facility may be availed of again! Prepare to do other mothers similar favours yourself in future!
