Coping with hypertension

Hypertension is common in obese and senior citizens. Know more about causes, symptoms and treatments of high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is something which is vital for the functioning of the body. Blood pressure helps the blood circulation in the entire body, supporting the functions of other organs in the body. Do you know that blood pressure is not constant all the time? It keeps adjusting according to the mental status, medications, temperature and the food we eat. However, it is difficult for the body to maintain normal blood pressure sometimes. This condition can result in high blood pressure or low blood pressure.
High blood pressure is referred as hypertension in scientific terms. Hypertension is a cardiovascular disorder. Like common cold this disorder is prevalent throughout the world. It is related with obesity and old age most of the times. However it can affect the young generation too. Read on to know more about hypertension, to avoid it and make your life easier.

What is hypertension or high blood pressure?

Hypertension is caused due to the increase pressure in arteries. Hypertension can be increased in cases of mental imbalance or obesity but these are not the only causes of it. The measure of blood pressure which is below 120/80 is regarded as a normal blood pressure.Blood pressure which is 140/90 or beyond it is considered as high blood pressure, which is hypertension. The first and the second number indicating blood pressure are known as systolic and diastolic respectively.
Hypertension can be responsible for the diseases like stroke, arteriosclerosis, kidney disorders, heart disorders, eye problems etc. These disorders are caused as a result of late diagnosis or high blood pressure for the prolonged period. It is thus essential to do regular checkups of blood pressure to avoid the risk. Early diagnosis and treatment are vital to stay away from dreadful diseases.

Causes and forms of hypertension

When the causes of hypertension cannot be determined, it can be 'essential hypertension'. In this case genetic factor may contribute to this disorder. A major portion of the population affected by hypertension is of essential type. The other kind of hypertension is known as 'secondary hypertension'. It is caused due to the some deficiency in a particular organ of the body.
The hypertension is also caused due to increased mental pressure or nervousness. It is known as 'white coat hypertension' or 'borderline hyper tension'. Increasing age can also be one of the reasons for blood pressure problems.

Symptoms of hypertension

Here is a list of symptoms of hypertension, have a quick look at it. If you observe such symptoms, make sure that you meet your physician immediately and get your blood pressure checked. However the symptoms observed by each individual are different from the other.
  • Prolonged headaches
  • Affected vision
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Bleeding nose
  • Vomiting sensation
  • Giddiness
  • Tiredness
  • Occurrence of weird noise like buzzing in ears
  • Need for urinating frequently
  • Abnormal heart beats

Treatments for hypertension

The treatments for hypertension may vary in the case of each individual. Doctors may suggest different ways with respect to the severity of the disorder. Here are some of the common ways used for treating hypertension. You should take physicians advice for knowing prefect combination of treatment for your disorder. As the science and technology will develop new and better ways will be available for treating hypertension.
  • Avoiding alcoholic drinks
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Adopting new diet plan suitable for hypertension
  • Regular exercise, yoga and mediation
  • Medications and drugs
  • Limited usage of salt in food
  • Overcoming obesity
In many cases people suffering from this disorder are unaware about it. This results in inviting trouble without any reason. As hypertension is not diagnosed during the early stages people have to face many dreadful diseases. To avoid such complications it is necessary to take physician's guidance on regular basis. Performing exercises and balanced diet are equally important to stay away form such disorders. Proper health care will keep hypertension away as well as save long medical bills. It is therefore said that prevention is better than cure.
