There are various causes of stomach ailments like improper eating habits, smoking etc. However, regular yoga practice can prove very beneficial for coping with stomach problems. Read on to know more about the yoga asanas for dealing with stomach ailments.

Stomach problems can arise all of a sudden. It is also considered as the magic box of human body. One of the facts is that you will be comfortable and healthy only when your stomach functions well.

If one fine day you feel burning sensation in your stomach and it rises to your throat, you are suffering from acidity. Usually it is caused due to over eating or eating spicy food. There are other reasons too that cause acidity in stomach.

Causes of Stomach Ailments

Here are some of the common causes of stomach ailments.

  • Rich spicy diet
  • Wrong diet that is, eating more chilies or fried food items
  • Over eating
  • Less consumption of milk, curd, fruits and green vegetables
  • Odd or irregular eating hours
  • Excess intake of certain food items like tea, coffee
  • Specific medicines
  • Alcohol
  • Smoking

Benefits of Yoga Asanas in Stomach Problems

Some yoga asanas are very helpful and helps in common stomach problems like indigestion, acidity and few more. This is because specific yoga asanas help detoxify your body as well as stimulate digestion. These also help if the stomach problems are due to stress and anxiety.

Yoga Asanas for Stomach Ailments

  • Yogamudra
  • Padahastasana

  • Surya namaskar

Pranayamas

Pranayamas are very beneficial for coping with stomach ailments. Here are the types of Pranayamas.

  • Anulom vilom

Along with all these asanas, practicing concentration and medication are also very helpful. It is good to sit in vajrasana for ten to fifteen minutes after every meal. This helps strengthen digestive system and eradicates the main cause of acidity.

Pranayama is extremely helpful in perfecting digestion process. This is mainly because it relaxes the organs in the stomach and the organs receive adequate blood. Oxygen helps organs to function properly and helps in the healing process as well.

However, no matter what yoga asana you practice, you should take complete care and caution and perform under right guidance. Extreme twisting poses can be done only when the problem is not severe. Some believe that while twisting, if you take first left twist and then to the right, it will be more beneficial.

When to Perform Asanas?

Depending on the severity and history of stomach ailment you can set a time for yoga asanas. Usually it is recommended that yoga asanas done early in the morning are very helpful and give additional positive results too.

If you are new for yoga asanas, you should first of all consult your doctor. This is also advisable for those people who have undergone surgery recently. In any case, you should make sure that your body is ready to practice yoga.

You can practice yoga everyday. However, if you lack time or because of any reason you are unable to do everyday, you should practice yoga asanas at least 3 – 4 days in a week. You will find that you have immensely benefited by yoga and there will be overall health improvements as well.

Along with yoga, try to bring some changes in your eating habits and lifestyle. Add more green vegetables and fresh fruits in your diet and avoid junk food, processed food and food items that have high content of salt and sugar.
