This article explains the kind of sleeping problems a pregnant woman can have and also informs about various safe and natural aids to overcome sleep problems during pregnancy.

Sleeping Problems during Pregnancy

During pregnancy, physical and hormonal changes do not allow would-be moms to have quality sleep. In each trimester of pregnancy, would-be moms face different types of sleep challenges. Find here the common sleep problems a pregnant woman face in each trimester:

Sleep Problems in 1st Trimester

  • Feeling sleepiness during daytime
  • Increased urge of urination at night causes frequent waking up

It is better for pregnant women to avoid taking medication for sleeplessness as it could cause harm to the babies. Natural remedies and other safe sleeping aids should be tried out first before medicines are prescribed to would-be mothers by their doctors. Would be moms should never take any drug or medicines without consulting their doctors.

Pregnancy Pillows

Disturbed sleep, which is quite normal affair during pregnancy, can be made comfortable by using specially designed pregnancy pillow. If would-be moms do not get specially designed pregnancy pillows then they can use extra pillows for having support to sleep in a comfortable position. Sleeping on side is the recommended sleeping posture during pregnancy. This prevents the uterus, which has become heavy due to growing foetus size, from creating pressure on the large organs especially the liver.

Drinking warm Fluid

Having a cup of warm milk before going to bed is also suggested to would-be moms for better sleep. Would-be moms should drink warm milk at least an hour before they are planning to go to the bed. This will prevent urge of frequent urination at night.

Proper Nutrition

As pregnancy is advancing, food items that are rich in carbohydrates and proteins should be taken as per the advice of doctor. This will result in better sleep for the pregnant women.

Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation techniques like yoga, stretching or deep breathing which is done under expert’s supervision, massage done by a trained prenatal masseur, or taking shower before sleep can be helpful in having a better sleep. Regular exercises as suggested by the doctors can also help would-be moms in getting undisturbed sleep.
Natural remedies and other effective sleeping aids as suggested by doctors should be used by would-be moms to overcome the problem of sleeplessness. The ultimate goal of would-be moms is to have sound sleep throughout the night so that their body and mind remains fresh and their babies can have proper growth.
