Frequent Urination during Pregnancy

This article provides information on frequent urination during pregnancy, its causes and how to deal with it. Though frequent urination is normal for pregnant women but medical advice is needed if urination is associated with other symptoms.

Sonia does not like to go to the toilet frequently but she cannot help it because she is pregnant for two months and frequent urination is one of the common and early symptoms of pregnancy. She feels more disgusted when she has to wake up from sleep to urinate very frequently. She wants to know if she can combat with frequent urination for rest of her pregnancy period.

Causes of Frequent Urination during Pregnancy

hCG Hormone is responsible for causing frequent urge for urination in pregnant women. Due to this hormone flow of blood in pelvic region and kidneys get increased and as a result kidneys start functioning more. The uterus also creates pressure on the urinary bladder and storage of urine is not possible for longer time. Therefore urge for expelling urine is frequent.

It is also observed that urge for urination increases at night especially when pregnant women lie down. The fluids get accumulated in the lower region of the body when pregnant women lie down and then fluids go back to the urinary bladder through blood.

Urination during Different Stages of Pregnancy

During 1st trimester frequent urination happens due to hormonal changes. Frequency of urination also increases as uterus gets expanded and pressure is exerted on the urinary bladder.

Frequent urge of urination decreases during 2nd trimester of pregnancy. During 2nd trimester, the position of uterus rises to a bit higher position than that of abdomen and pressure is exerted on the bladder. During 2nd trimester, frequency of urination is almost normal but this situation is temporary.

The urge of urination again increased during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. The main cause is the increased size of baby and the position of baby. During 3rd trimester, the baby comes down to pelvic region and as delivery date comes near, pressure exerted on the urinary bladder is more. During 3rd trimester, would-be mothers need to wake up at night for urination.

Relief From Frequent Urination during Pregnancy

The pregnant women will get relieved from frequent urge of urination after the child birth. But for few days soon after the childbirth, new mothers would urinate more as the body would throw away all the fluids that got retained during the pregnancy period. Within 5-7 days, the urge of urination will become normal.

Is Frequent Urination a Problem during Pregnancy?

As such frequent urination is very common during pregnancy especially in the 1st and 3rd trimesters. But medical intervention is needed if any kind of pain or burning sensation is experienced along with frequent urination. Doctor must be visited when urge of urination is there but only few drops of urine come out. One of the probable reasons of these symptoms could be Urinary Tract Infection. UTIs must be treated immediately because if they remain untreated it could lead to infection of kidneys. There could be premature childbirth if UTIs remain untreated in would-be mothers.

How to Combat Frequent Urination during Pregnancy?

Frequent urination is common during frequency but there are certain ways using which would-be mothers could manage this urge. One such way is by doing Kegel Exercises. Doing these exercises help in strengthening the muscles surrounding urethra. Urethra is the tube through which urine is thrown out of the body. These exercises also help in better bladder control.

Frequent urination does not mean that would-be mothers would stop drinking fluids. It is important to drink lots of fluids to keep hydrated. It is important to avoid caffeinated drinks. Would-be mothers should drink more fluids during daytime as compared to evening and night.

Hormonal changes happening inside the body of a pregnant woman cause the urge of urination very frequently. Though, it is very disturbing while on work with few recommended exercises and health tips it can be managed.
