Meditation for Pregnant Women

Meditation is very beneficial for pregnant women to stay balanced and relaxed during pregnancy. It also helps to boost the overall health of the mother and growth of the unborn child. Read on to learn more about the benefits of meditating during pregnancy.

Pregnancy is a phase every married woman longs for. Apart from the comfort and care provided from family, it is very important for the expectant mother to balance personal, physical and mental happiness. Meditation is a perfect blend and solution for the above. Not only is it an overall soothing experience but also enhances the growth of the foetus.
Let's see what makes meditation so good for pregnant women.

Why Meditation is Important for Pregnant Women?

It is well known that a foetus is nourished by the umbilici and it is also a passage for hormones from the mother to the growing baby. Meditation is widely known for its stress busting qualities and its continual practice during pregnancy ensures the mental well-being of the carrying mother.
Practicing meditation ensures:
  • Reduction of stress
  • Decrease in pregnancy related issues such as morning sickness, high blood pressure and sleeplessness.
  • It helps in increasing oxygen supply to the baby.
  • It helps expecting mothers to get rid of negative feelings like fear, anger and anxiety.
  • It also helps expecting mothers to feel relaxed which ensures good blood circulation in the body.
  • It improves bonding between mother and child and causes a long lasting positive effect on the brain development of foetus.
  • Meditating results in the baby's over all development.
  • It also provides the baby with better immunity. (Meditation increases the levels of melatonin, thus supporting the immune system, increasing quality of sleep and improving moods.)
  • It has also been proved that pregnant women who meditate regularly experience less pain during labour and are happier and healthier during gestation and delivery.
  • The positive effects of meditating during pregnancy can also help to indirectly reduce the risks of pregnancy complications like premature labour, miscarriage, low birth weight in babies, birth defects, complications during delivery etc.
  • Meditation is a very helpful tool for pregnant women to boost their inner strength and fight the fear of labour and delivery.
  • Meditating throughout the pregnancy can also help to recover from the rigours of delivery and childbirth faster.
  • It can also prove very beneficial to deal with and keep issues like post delivery depression at bay.

How can Pregnant Women Mediate?

Meditation is an amazing technique to reach out to the unborn baby and make a connection with your bundle of joy. The main aim of it is to be absolute and completely relaxed.
This can be achieved in the following ways:
  • Wear comfortable clothes while practising meditation so that you are able to sit comfortably.
  • Choose a quite room with minimum disturbance in order to mediate properly.
  • Close your eyes and sit in an erect position and concentrate on your breathing.
  • Focus on gentle inhalations and long slow exhalations. Make sure you expand your abdomen, ensuring more oxygen supply to the baby.
  • Your relaxation level directly affects the baby and the energy is passed on to your loved one inside your tummy.
  • Chant any religious or spiritual lines you wish to, so as to block out any other disturbances or even making conversation with your unborn would be considered good.
  • If you are a beginner, start with practising meditation for 10 minutes daily and then gradually increase the time.
  • Make sure you give yourself and the baby ample amount of time. After all, meditating during pregnancy is like bonding with your baby who will fill your world with joy as soon as it arrives.
Last but not the least, ensure a healthy diet and always think happy thoughts. Following the above mentioned techniques regularly and constant checkups with the gynecologist will ensure a painless and easy labour.
Wishing all you mothers a happy pregnancy!
