Importance of Prenatal Care

Importance of Prenatal Care

Proper prenatal care ensures healthy and complications free pregnancy. Find out why you should take prenatal care seriously and how should be your routine prenatal care regimen.

A proper prenatal care is absolutely essential for every pregnant woman. Its necessity lies in the fact that it does not only ensure the health of the mother, but the well-being of the unborn child too. In order to have a pregnancy that is relatively free from complications, it is essential that good prenatal care is provided.

Women who are unable to undertake or are deprived of good prenatal care are found to be likely to give birth to low birth-weight babies and in some cases, the complications in the newborn might prove to be dangerously fatal. Certain pregnancy and labour or delivery complications may not be predicted or avoided, but a good prenatal care ensures that those complications are overcome with considerable ease, and cause lesser pain to the mother or baby.

So a routine prenatal care will always give you a positive outcome. The moment you are sure of your successful conception, you ought to know that the time commences for a prenatal care as well. Here are some most important prenatal care aspects that are recommended for a pregnant woman:

Get Your Preconception Vitamins Right

The point is you need to take prenatal care seriously, the moment you decide to become pregnant. Consult your doctor, and you will be prescribed a regular dosage of Folic acid at least three months before conceiving. Your diet during pregnancy should be ideally supplemented with at least 400 mg of folic acid. There are certain prenatal vitamins that provide the extra folic acid. Make sure that you follow your doctor’s advice on taking supplements of enough iron and vitamin A. Folic acid helps in effectively alleviating certain variants of birth defects and other complications during pregnancy.

Get the Required Immunisations

There are certain diseases from which you need to be immunised when you decide to get pregnant. Rubella or German measles is one of them. If one is infected with rubella during pregnancy, the foetus stands at a high risk of developing serious health issues like cataract, heart ailments, problems in hearing and mental retardation. These associated health issues give rise to a condition called congenital rubella and is more severe than getting simply infected with rubella. So getting immunised against rubella is a vital aspect of prenatal care.

Healthy Lifestyle

Just immunisations and healthy supplements do not ensure a healthy pregnancy. Prenatal care also consists of ensuring that you are leading a healthy lifestyle that will ascertain the well being of the unborn child.

Well Balanced Diet

Check whether you are having a well balanced diet with all essential vitamins, minerals, carbs, protein and essential fats and good amounts of fibre. These are simple ways to ensure a fit body that can be well equipped and prepared to bear and nurture a new life. You need to provide all the essential nutrients that are required for the growth of a developing foetus.

Regular Workouts

Ensure that your regular workout is not missed. Consult your doctor and an expert fitness instructor on what ought to be the safest and desired prenatal exercise regimen for you. Remember, regular exercise promotes good health and enhanced fitness.

Adequate Rest

Take adequate rest. Regular workout and rest are two essential requirements of a healthy body. Do not exert your health during pregnancy and your body needs a good deal of rest too. So make sure that you reduce and avoid stress and take adequate rest.

A Reduced Caffeine Intake

Cut out on caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes. These need to be avoided totally as such unhealthy lifestyle habits can pose extreme danger to your chances of conception and the possibility of a healthy pregnancy and a smooth delivery.

Finally, remember there is just no substitute for a good prenatal care. Just take care that you follow a healthy lifestyle, a good dietary habit, regular workout and take proper rest whenever and as required. Make it a point not to miss your regular appointments with your doctor, follow his advice and suggestions and get all your tests done in time. A disciplined regimen will ensure that you have a healthy and enjoyable pregnancy term and smooth delivery.

I had very low iron levels and haemoglobin during my pregnancy. My doctor prescribed me iron fortified tonic which I regularly took and thus I was able to prevent complications due to low iron levels.
