Don’t Consume Alcohol –

There have been several studies to prove that when mothers consume alcohol, the baby is born with lasting health defects. These involve foetal alcohol spectrum disorder and several complex birth defects.

Don’t Smoke –

You must quit smoking if you are a chain smoker when you are pregnant. Remember, even passive smoking is proven to be harmful for the foetus and the mother. Premature birth, miscarriage and sudden infant death syndrome are common effects of smoking. The baby loses its required nourishment and even the oxygen supply is hindered if the mother is inhaling cigarette smoke.

Don’t Take OTC and Illegal Drugs –

Over-the-counter medicines must be avoided when you are pregnant. All your medicines must be approved through consultation with your physician. Even ‘simple’ OTC medicines like aspirin must be avoided. You might not be aware but a property of the medicine might have a devastating effect on the foetus. Also you must not do drugs when you are pregnant. Miscarriage is a common follow through in such cases and the baby might be born underweight, with congenital birth defects, pre-natal and post-natal growth issues, distortion of facial features along with a dysfunctional central nervous system.

Avoid X-Rays –

X-ray exposure however minute can be harmful to the growing foetus. It damages growth along with several other acute problems.

Don’t Take Vitamin A Supplements –

Vitamin A supplements during pregnancy risks the baby to be born with multiple birth defects. There is no harm in having Vitamin A from natural sources, but supplements can be really harmful. Also avoid having other vitamins that are fat soluble like D, E and K. This is because they tend to accumulate in the tissues and body organs causing a complex childbirth condition.

Avoid Certain Food –

Undercooked egg, fish and meat must not be taken during pregnancy. Also avoid seafood and certain varieties of fishes that have a high level of mercury. Don’t have raw milk, soft cheese, raw sprouts, refrigerated pates and meat spreads.

Don’t Come in Contact With Toxic –

All chemical products that are toxic like cleaning agents or paints must be avoided during pregnancy. They can be paint fumes, solvents, lead, mercury, insecticides and pesticides.

Don’t Come Near Reptiles, Cats and Dogs –

Salmonella is the disease that can be caused when a pregnant woman or even a child comes in contact with reptiles. It is a virus that gets transferred through their faeces. It can cause miscarriage along with other complications.

Don’t Clean the Litter Box of Your Pet –

Contact with cat or dog litter box exposes you to toxoplasmosis which is an infection caused by the parasite present in the litter box.

Don’t Go For Hot Baths And Sauna –

Sauna, steam rooms and hot tubs must be avoided during pregnancy. The high temperature in each of them is harmful to the unborn baby as it affects its normal growth and development.

You should not only follow the above mentioned top 10 pregnancy don’ts but also avoid douching and use of such fragrant feminine products as they can irritate the vagina and be potentially harmful to the unborn baby.

Activities that involve running, jumping or those that can cause any type of injury should also be avoided during pregnancy. When you are pregnant do not do gymnastics, scuba diving, skiing or horse riding. Consult with your doctor on what games or physical activity is safe for you and the unborn baby.
