Is it Necessary to Punish Children?

Is it Necessary to Punish Children?

Whether it is necessary to punish children on not is a debatable question. It depends on the situations and circumstances. Read on to know the pros and cons of punishing a child.

As per the sayings of the Medical Science, “Punishment can control misbehaviour but by itself will not teach desirable behaviour or even reduce the desire to misbehave”. Nowadays with a lot of nuclear families kids are pampered a lot. But it is also not good to pamper a child always, otherwise it will become her habit and she will not listen to you unless you can fulfil her demands. Now this can take a rebellious shape and should be controlled from the very beginning.

Punishment Should Not Be Physical

Parents should always refrain from punishing their child physically. Physical abuse and torture makes the child feel unwanted which may take a very bad turn in future. Nowadays, abusing a child is a criminal offence in the eyes of Law.

Love is the Only Solution to Teach Discipline to Children

It is only through love that an ill behaved child can be taught manners. If you lose your cool when talking to your child who is misbehaving then you can never control your child. Instead sit with her alone and talk to her patiently. Try to figure out her problems and make your child feel secured and comfortable while she is sharing her problems to you. Make her understand patiently the values of manners in life. Manners are indispensable while a child grows up. It will help her in her future endeavours too.

Punishment is Not the Only Solution

Sometimes too much pampering makes a child ill behaved and some parents think that punishing their child severely will solve their problems. But this is an absolute wrong thought. Punishing your child too severely will make her more stubborn. So it is better not to go to any extremes so that it becomes very difficult for you to revert back. That means do not pamper your child too much so that bringing back your child in the right track again becomes difficult for you.

Punishment May Not Be Fruitful

Sometimes it is seen that despite the parents being very strict and teaching children proper discipline in strict hands, punishing severely in case of any wrong doings on the part of the children but still the children remains ill behaved and ill mannered. So punishment here makes no sense unless you can teach your child what is expected from them.
Instead of punishing it is better to opt some other fruitful ways in cool head so that your children remain under your own control and think twice before doing anything wrong or before going haywire intentionally. The word “intentionally” is used because sometimes it can be seen that children unknowingly commit something wrong. This happens especially during the growing period, more specifically during adolescence. During this time be very careful before punishing your child as during this period of the age the ego of the children is at its highest peak and if they are insulted they can take some drastic steps sometimes at the cost of their own lives.

Punishment Should Not Be the Reflection Personal Grudges

If you punish your child because you are personally very frustrated yourself because of work pressure at office and you see your children doing nuisance in the house, you may lose your cool. But be very careful this should not affect your child’s behaviour. Do not yell or beat your children. Your personal furiousness should not be the cause of punishment for your child.
So to punish or not to punish your children totally depends on you. It is you who need to understand your kids and manage them without yelling at them or beating them. If kids do something that is really wrong, you must think of the constructive ways to punish them when punishments cannot be avoided at all.
Psychologists say that punishing children depends on how the parents were brought up when they were kids. If they were punished severely during their childhood days they would apply the same thing in raising up their child. But love can make any impossible work possible. So instead of punishing it is better to pacify your child with love.

Why should parents avoid punishing children? When is it necessary to punish children? Which are the constructive ways to punish children? Discuss here.
