Akshaya Tritiya (Akha Teej)

Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej is considered as one of the auspicious days by Hindus. On this day new ventures are started, new purchases are made and traditional ceremonies are performed. Read more about significance and celebration of Akshaya Tritiya.

Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej, is a highly auspicious day which falls this on 24th April in the year 2012. “Akshaya” factually means one that is indestructible. Hence, this day is considered to be ideal for starting new ventures. It is believed that all investments made on the day of Akshaya Tritiya will only appreciate. As per the Hindu Lunar calendar Akshaya Tritiya normally falls on the 3rd day of Shukala Paksha in the month of Vaishakh.

This day is considered auspicious for conducting marriages, beginning new ventures, investing and buying valuables like gold and diamond since the sun and the moon are said to radiate and best placed on this day.

Legend behind Akshaya Tritiya Celebrations

There are many legends surrounding the celebration of this auspicious day. The most important legend associated with Akshaya Tritiya is that of Lord Krishna and Kuchela. As per this legend a poor Brahmin and schoolmate of Sri Krishna, Kuchela who was also known as Sudama visited Krishna with the objective of asking him for some financial help. He carried with him a handful of “Poha” or beaten rice which was one of the favourites of Lord Krishna.

Upon reaching the palace at Dwarka, Kuchela was awestruck by the wealth and opulence he saw and became ashamed to give the ‘Poha’ to Krishna. However, it did not escape the notice of Krishna who grabbed the small bag held by his schoolmate and started eating it. Thereafter the Lord treated his friend like God. Kuchela in turn was completely overwhelmed by Krishna’s love and affection. He forgot about the financial assistance and went back home empty handed.

Upon reaching his village, Kuchela found that his old hut had been replaced by a palace. His wife and children were dressed in new clothes. Kuchela then understood that all the transformation had happened due to “Krishna Leela”. Thereafter people have started observing the day on which Kuchela met Sri Krishna as Akshaya Tritiya.

Another popular legend has it that on the day of Akshaya Tritiya Pandavas who were in exile received the Akshay Patra - a bowl which gives unlimited amount of food from Sri Krishna. Hence it is believed that investments made on any valuables on this day will only increase in value. In fact Lord Krishna is associated with most of the legends of Tritiya.

Akshaya Tritya (Akha Teej) Celebrations

Let us have a look at the traditional ways of celebrating Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej.

Puja -

The main Puja and prayers on this day are all dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. In most houses simple Vishnu Puja is done in the morning with Tulsi leaves and flowers. Elaborate Lakshmi Pujan or Lakshmi Kubera Havan is also performed at many places. People also visit shrines of Goddess Lakshmi, Vishnu and Lord Krishna.

Annadhanam -

Annadhanam or offering food to the poor and needy is considered to be one of the simplest ways to express thanks and gratitude to God for all his blessings. Hence, many people do Annadhanam on this day. In addition to offering food, other forms of donations and giving alms on the Akshaya Tritiya day is common.

Investing in Gold -

Since it is thought that whatever one invests in on the day of Akshaya Tritiya will continue to grow, appreciate and bring prosperity; people invest in gold on this day.

In present time vigorous campaigns are conducted by jewel shops, banks, and financial institutions much before Akshaya Tritiya day with a view to exploit the materialistic urge in people. Hence, people have taken to throng jewellery shops rather than visit temples or help the poor and needy on the day of Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej.
