First Trimester End

First Trimester End

Find out all about the period of your first trimester and normal early pregnancy symptoms.

It is a major development for your baby when your first trimester ends. The journey of the fertilised egg has now completed the stages of being a blastocyte and then an embryo and now, it can be called a foetus. For the mother the weight gain related to pregnancy has not yet begun, but as you now march into your second trimester, you will be gaining somewhere around three to five pounds. The weight gain will be continual from here on now.

The first trimester commences from the first day of your last period and end some 13-14 weeks after. Let us note in brief what the probable symptoms that you experience during the end of your first trimester are.

The Bodily Changes

The first trimester is called an early pregnancy stage. So during the period of your first trimester till the end of it, that is, approximately thirteen weeks later, you will experience the normal early pregnancy symptoms like, nausea, and fatigue. In many cases, women may not be able to discern their pregnancy and they get baffled by the changes in the body. It is then that they go in for a pregnancy test.

The Physical Changes

At the end of the first trimester, you will not see the pregnant baby bump that is normally associated with a pregnant woman. Your middle has not yet begun to expand. But you will notice that your body is beginning to put on weight in other places, like your breasts. They become large and tender than their otherwise normal shape and feel. This is because the breasts are getting ready to produce milk.

The Emotional Changes

You will be experiencing an entire see-saw of emotional stages by the time you are about to reach the end of your first trimester. These are primarily caused by the fluctuating hormones which cause considerable upheavals in your emotional status. At one moment you feel ecstatic, the other moment you are drowned in anxiety, while at the next moment you are excited. All these mood swings make you nonetheless apprehensive about your right state of mind. But it helps to simply keep in mind that these are natural stages of a developing pregnancy.

The Weight Gain Factor

As mentioned earlier, during the end of your first trimester, you will not experience major weight gain. It can be around five pounds on the whole. The developing foetus will add just a few ounces to your body. So the rest of the weight gain comprises of the following: increase in blood volume, extra breast tissue and the amniotic fluid. In some women it has also been observed that they tend to lose a bit of weight which is attributed to the morning sickness.

State of the Foetus at the End of the First Trimester

The foetus at this stage has developed all the major organs by the time it is about four weeks old. In size it measures just about 1/100th of an inch and by the time it completes the sixth week, it grows quite fast to about 1/6th of an inch. The legs and arms begin to develop, it develops a circulatory system too and you can see its first heartbeat through an ultrasound. In the second month the baby grows to 1/2 an inch and the development process of the major organs and body system is nearly complete. It now acquires the shape of human form. At the end of your third trimester you will find the foetus kicking, wiggling its toes and begin to open and close its mouth. It has grown to about 4 inches and weighs about an ounce.

Since this is still the early stage of your pregnancy, you must ensure that you continue to follow the doctor’s instructions and get all your tests done at the suggested intervals. According to your health status, you might require intensive care and the ultrasound screening might be spaced out.

First trimester end marks the end of a phase of pregnancy. Second trimester is much smoother without much complaints.
