Children are intrusive and prying by nature. They convey their feelings and thinking through their behaviour. The behaviour changes with time and so there are discipline techniques designed to suit children of different ages. Here are some smart discipline techniques for parents suited for kids of different age groups.

Disciplining a 1-Year-Old Child

A 1-year-old is curious, energetic and wants to move around always. She wants to explore the world around her. You should focus on prevention and so for this, you need to childproof your house. You should keep your expectations reasonable and demonstrate appropriate behaviour keeping your tone, voice and facial expressions under control. Comfort or distract her during meltdowns.

Disciplining a 2-Year-Old Child

A 2-year-old has started recognizing senses and she is through an emotional roller coaster ride. Your child is slightly capable of following your instructions. So, avoid power struggles and state your expectations clearly and without raising your voice or tone. Make sure you do not over estimate your child’s abilities and offer simple choices. Deal with tantrums very carefully and do not give in. Divert your child’s attention to let her calm down.

Disciplining a 3 to 5-Year-Old Child

Though tantrums would be common, your child has now started to have more control over emotions. Help with tasks, ask for simple assistance and acknowledge her effort. Play games, practice routines and keep consequences short. Ignore whining, handle lies and cheating calmly. Talk to your child and explain the effects of her behaviour on others.

Disciplining a 5 to 7-Year-Old Child

Your child’s world is expanding and she has to handle new social and academic pressures. She would like to be treated more maturely and so you should encourage and appreciate independent problem solving skills, choose quick rewards for daily dose of motivation and use praise to reinforce good behaviour and build her self-esteem.

Disciplining an 8 to 10-Year-Old Child

Groups and social behaviour is now introduced in your child’s life. Find out where she fits in. Talk to her most of the time as discussion is the most effective tool. Try grown up approaches and emphasize natural consequences.

Discipline should be inculcated right from early childhood. Children may not be able to imbibe discipline on growing up.

Every child is unique so each child is required to handled differently. Keeping the age factor in mind is also very important while disciplining him or her.
