Most of us do everything
in our power to keep our faces from developing wrinkles, but we do
little else for the rest of our body.
Exercise is the single most important thing you need to do to keep your body
looking and feeling young. The problem with skin on our bodies is not
that wrinkles start showing, but that areas start sagging very soon. In
fact, skin on the top underside portion of our arms start sagging as
early as our late-twenties. We thus need to keep muscles strong and in
shape by working out regularly.
Swimming
If you wanted to take up an exercise but were unsure as to
which you should take up, consider swimming. Swimming tones your arms,
legs and stomach, and essentially gives your entire body a workout
without causing excessive strain. Chances of injury while swimming are
low, while other exercises such as jogging, can cause knee strain and
other injuries.
If you cannot swim or don't have access to a pool, you could
consider two of the most convenient exercises - walking and jogging.
Racquet Sports
If you have tried various exercises only to give them a short
while later, consider taking up a sport. You may find that you stick
with it once you get the hang of it and enjoy playing it. This does
take time though, and you will need access to sports facilities. You
will also need to know likeminded people who you can go and play with -
or continue being regular with the sport until you get to know others
around. Once you are familiar with everyone who plays the sport, you
will enjoy the game much more.
Classes
If you cannot swim, don't have access to a club or sports
facilities, and are looking for options to walking or jogging since
you're not very fond of solitary activities, consider joining a class.
If it takes a class for you to be regular, then, by all means, go for
it. You could consider yoga or aerobic classes. Alternatively, you
could also consider joining dance classes. Dancing is a strenuous
activity, and in addition toexercising, you will learn something new and exciting, and will become more graceful in the bargain!
Motivation
Having trouble with motivation? Tell yourself that exercise
is not a choice. Just like you have to wake up every morning, and you
have to eat your breakfast, so also you have to work out daily, or
three times a week. Sure you could work out less than that - anyexercise is better than no exercise
- but the more regular you are, the healthier you will be at a later
age. My 70-year-old grandmother who is so regular with yoga, can still
sit up with her back straight and her legs crossed, and even bend over
backwards if she has to, while her friend recently broke a bone in her
arm trying to pull a sweater over her head.
Similarly, a 55-year-old colleague, who to this day plays
squash daily, always enthusiastically leads the way when we go on
treks, while my 53-year-old boss would rather stay back at the campsite
waiting for us, as he nurses a bad back.
Schedule
Set a time to go exercising, and stick by this time. If you
decide to workout when you have a little free time, you will find that
within a month you will have less and less free time, and soon your exercise routine will have flopped. Fix your workout time, and plan other activities around it, instead of the other way around.
