Working during Pregnancy

Working during Pregnancy

Pregnancy is not the end of career; it can be regarded as beginning of a new life. Being pregnant and working is absolutely fine. Some care is needed. Follow are general work and pregnancy related queries and solutions.

Q. I am a sales executive in a large company. I have just found out that I am pregnant. How long can I continue to work after I become pregnant?

This really depends on the type of work you are doing. In most cases, assuming your pregnancy is proceeding normally, (and unless you are an astronaut or a trapeze artist!), you can continue to work right into your ninth month.

There are certain precautions you could take – avoid strenuous activity, such as stair climbing, extreme temperatures and smoky areas. Do not carry heavy weights or attempt very bumpy bus rides. Eat regular meals and take frequent breaks. You should take care of yourself more seriously, avoid eating zero value foods while on the move. The daily commute and the usual grind of an everyday job should not come in the way of your pregnancy. However, you should pay attention to “spotting” or other signs of stress and you must follow the instructions of your gynaecologist in this regard.

Q. I am normally so full of energy, I can put in the extra hours without any problems. I am just 3 months pregnant. Why am I so tired?

Your body is in the process of creating a baby. Fatigue is natural. The best way to combat fatigue is to get some extra sleep. Avoid unnecessary stress and exertion.

A deficiency in iron or calcium can also cause fatigue. So eat well. Do not indulge in sweets or junk foods which provide calories with little nutrition. Sometimes fatigue is caused by too much rest. In such cases light exercise such as a walk, will give you a boost.

If you experience breathlessness, pallor, palpitations or fainting it is absolutely essential to report this to your gynaecologist.
