PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a health disorder caused to women of ages 12 years to 45 years. The common causes of PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) are nothing but stress and faulty eating habits. Read on to know more about what PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is and how to treat PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome).

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a hormonal problem that causes women to face lot of other problems also. This is when a number of cysts form in the ovaries. In fact the symptoms that are a result of PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) are more problematic than the disease itself. Another fact is that PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is one of the most common causes of infertility in women.

Symptoms of PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)

The most common symptoms of PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) are irregular menstrual cycle and prominence of male hormones. These symptoms include occurrence of excess hair growth on the body and hair loss, if experienced, is male patterned.

Other Symptoms Are

  • Infertility
  • High cholesterol levels
  • High blood pressure
  • Irregular and disturbed menstruation
  • Obesity and massive weight gain
  • Dandruff
  • Oily skin
  • Small and multiple cysts formed in ovaries
  • Insulin resistance and increased levels of insulin
  • Discolouration of skin

The worst thing about PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is that it is not a temporary disease and there are no pills or medication that can actually cure PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). Once you are detected with this problem, you are likely to suffer with this for the rest of your life unless you take some precautions and stick to them.

Tips to Deal with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)

The best thing to deal with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is to change your eating habits and change your lifestyle. This will help you stay away from the symptoms and side effects of the disease and you can lead a normal life as well.

Add Complex Carbohydrates

Try to reduce simple and refined carbohydrates and replace it with whole grain wheat and legumes. Refined grain products are white rice, white bread, pastries, breakfast food, candy and so on. These create insulin resistance and must be avoided at any cost.

Increase Protein Intake

Women suffering from PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) must increase their intake of protein in daily diet. The best sources of protein are fish, eggs, lean meat, poultry and these help keep the hormones normalized.

Change the Type of Fat Intake

Some of the fats like Trans fats and man made fats do not really work well with women suffering from PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). The best fat picks are virgin olive oil, cod liver oil, flax oil and fish oil.

Increase Vegetables

Vegetables are real life saviours. It is always good to increase intake of fresh vegetables and this is really helpful and useful self-help therapy.

Check out Your Meal Portions

Have a check on your meal portions and eat a balanced and controlled diet. Try to enjoy the meal eating slowly.

Add Salad and Soups

These when added in the beginning helps you eat a limited portion and hence your problem of weight gain is looked after up to great extent.

Exercise

Make it a routine and do some physical exercise daily. This will improve your overall health and improve fertility.

Control Stress

Meditate and perform yoga asanas to reduce stress.

Join a PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) Support Group

Do not stay isolated. It will only worsen the problem. Join groups and associations and participate in activities.

Consult Doctor

If the problem is out of control, see a doctor and follow the advice.

Follow these guidelines and just keep in mind that following a healthy routine and keeping yourself out of stress will help you lead a better life too. You will have control over PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and infertility.
