Causes of Indigestion during Pregnancy

Indigestion is one of the most common problems seen in pregnant women. Due to the normal craving towards the food that exists during pregnancy, it is very common that the pregnant women may eat excessively. This over eating may create indigestion, which is quite commonly seen during pregnancy.

Natural Causes of Indigestion during Pregnancy

Due to the hormonal changes that occur in the body of the pregnant women, it is quite common that the pregnant women come across indigestion problem because of the excessive acidic effect created in the stomach during pregnancy. Because of the reflux action of the acids in the stomach, the pregnant women may face indigestion and heartburn in almost all the trimesters of pregnancy.
Another important reason for indigestion is the baby growing inside the uterus. As the baby grows bigger and bigger, the baby places pressure on the uterus, which in turn, causes pressure on the abdomen. The pressure in the abdomen causes pain in the abdomen leading to aversion towards food and indigestion. In spite of this, if there are any other complications such as ulcer, gastritis, etc., it would also have an effect on the digestive system leading to indigestion.

Other Causes of Indigestion during Pregnancy

Indigestion may be caused due to the heavy diet taken at improper intervals, being hungry for a longer duration of time, eating spicy food, eating junk food, etc. during pregnancy. Taking junk food or spicy food would create more acidic effects in the stomach leading to heartburn and other related problems. Sometimes, when the water content taken is insufficient also, it would create indigestion problems leading to constipation during pregnancy.

Symptoms of Indigestion during Pregnancy

The most common symptoms of indigestion seen in pregnant women are nausea, vomiting, and pain in the abdominal area. Such symptoms must be reported to doctor.
Along with the heartburn created due to the excessive acidic effect caused due to indigestion, it would create an irritation in the chest area of the pregnant women. This irritation in the chest also called heartburn may also be taken as a symptom of indigestion. Constipation is also seen very commonly during pregnancy, which becomes severe as the days pass on. The constipation problem also can be taken as a symptom of indigestion occurring during pregnancy.

How to Reduce Indigestion during Pregnancy?

It may be very difficult to avoid indigestion during pregnancy. But, it possible to reduce the effects of indigestion caused due to the hormonal and bodily changes occurring during pregnancy. By taking frequent small quantity meals along with healthy salads in between would help fight indigestion during pregnancy. Avoiding junk and spicy food would definitely bring in good results as the acidic effects caused due to the spicy content in the food would be completely avoided. Taking plenty of water would also help in reducing the indigestion problems during pregnancy.

Treatment for Indigestion during Pregnancy

In spite of taking necessary steps to reduce indigestion, if the pain or problems of indigestion are still felt, it is good to take some warm water, lemon juice or fruit juices after consulting your doctor to overcome the inconvenience caused due to the indigestion occurring during pregnancy. If the problem is severe, it is good to consult the doctor for further advice.
It is not good to take self medications during pregnancy. Even for those women who had indigestion problems even before pregnancy and have experience in taking self medications, it is not advisable to take the same medicines during pregnancy. The side effects of those medicines may be harmful to the baby. So, it is advisable to consult a doctor to get proper medicines to reduce the effects of indigestion.
