How to Discipline Kids without Screaming

Screaming at kids is one of the destructive ways to discipline them. Let us take look at few tips for disciplining kids without screaming at them.

Many parents scream at their children while disciplining them, though out of utter frustration. Most regret afterwards. Read on to learn how to discipline kids without screaming or yelling at them.

There are parents who yell at their kids just because they get frustrated or annoyed or they are infuriated at something unavoidable in their lives. Some parents opt for spanking and yelling to discipline their children and it is very important for them to know that this is highly dangerous for their children’s sense of security and self-respect.

However, most parents do shout or even spank their children while disciplining, but afterwards feel guilty, wishing they could have handled the situation in a better way. Parents should remember one thing that children follow the footsteps of their parents and if they find that their parents yell when they do not listen, they will do the same thing when they will find themselves in similar situation. So, you have to be a role model for your children and if you want them to behave properly, you need to do that first.

Tips for Disciplining Kids without Screaming

Let us take a look at what parents can do to avoid screaming at children.

Find a Better Solution

When you find that you are getting into power struggle with your child, you should immediately try to get out of it. It is good to sit together and find a better solution. In order to saying a straight ‘no’, your child will feel good if you offer some choices to her. You can also try to lighten the situation with humour if you want.

Have Firm Statement

Children do bother their parents when they find that they are in hurry or very busy. In such cases, make sure you make a straight statement and if your child does not listen to you, stick to your statement. If you take your child to school not in proper uniform, she will feel embarrassed or might get punished in school. So, you must make her understand these things calmly in order to encourage her to get ready for school on time without making any fuss.

Be Responsive Instead of Being Reactive

There are situations like sibling disputes and arguments where it is not advisable to take side of any of the children. If you stay calm and ask them to settle their disputes, they will learn that it is not right to take sides. This also sets an example of how your children should behave among themselves. This also shows that you make yourself heard and understood and this goes a long way. Your kids learn how to treat others in life. Tell them what is wrong and what is right so that they behave accordingly. Set rules for them beforehand to avoid fights between siblings.

Explain Consequences of Misbehaviour Clearly

After you have set some rules, make sure you explain the consequences of misbehaving to your child very clearly. Make certain that you are calm and firm while explaining this to your children. Parents should plan beforehand how to handle the situation. This will help you give effective consequences and save you from yelling.

Praise Good Behaviour

Parents do get angry when children misbehave but forget to praise when the behaviour is good. Make sure you do this from now because this will prevent behaviour problems and your child will stop doing anything simply to seek your attention. When you praise them, they feel encouraged and this is, in fact, a very good way to reinforce your rules and remind them what is expected of them.

Usually parents misunderstand that discipline means to punish children. Well, in reality, disciplining means to teach and train your children to behave in a good manner in any kind of situation. Effective discipline will start when you are consistent in your way of expressing and acting values that you want to implant in your kids.
