How to Avoid Raising an Irresponsible Kid

How to Avoid Raising an Irresponsible Kid

Do you think you are raising an irresponsible child? Follow these tips to sow the seeds of responsibility and avoid raising an irresponsible child.

Parents all over the world are mostly aware of the virtues of being responsible. Most people want to raise kids who are not irresponsible and have a balanced perspective about life. However, given today’s materialistic and somewhat hedonistic society raising children who have an organic sense of responsibility has become something of a challenge. As you move towards the goal of raising healthy, responsible and morally strong kids you will be able to find some help from this guide.

Teaching the Concept of Satisfaction

Often the materialistic context of today’s society, media glitz and tremendous peer pressure constantly pushes children towards a culture of over indulgence and incessant demands. Such kids do not exercise any kind of responsibility while placing demands and it is very difficult for parents to satisfy them.
As a parent you would be better off teaching your kids the concept of satisfaction from an early age. This is not a phenomenon that kids understand naturally so it is up to you to teach your children to be content with what is necessary in life. Begin with saying “this is enough” in context of games, new clothes, candy or holidays etc and soon kids will begin to realize that there is a cap level to things that they can reasonably ask for.

The Difference Between Needs and Wants

Children do not organically realize the difference between the possessions that they actually need in life and the things they want in life. The judgment of being responsible enough to ask for the needs and work for the wants comes with maturity in life or has to be inculcated by parents.
Kids usually feel needs and wants with equal intensity so it is your responsibility as a parent to teach the difference. For example, you can teach your kids that while wanting toys can be a need wanting the latest version of the video game is a want. Or while wanting food at meal times is a need wanting candy between meals is a want. Help your kids make responsible choices by teaching them the disadvantages of giving in to wants all the time and the advantages of being responsible about making such choices.

Prioritizing Activities

One skill that every responsible adult needs to possess is the art of prioritization. The prioritization of work, duties and responsibilities over self indulgence, pleasure and acts of self interest comes with the ability of being able to act responsible.
As a parent one of the biggest gifts you can give your kids is to teach them to choose duty over pleasure when the situation demands it. For example, if you have received a bonus at work teach your kids that you are saving most of the money because saving for your future is an activity that you always prioritize. Another example would be when you choose to do complete pending work on an off day before going to the movies with your family as completing allocated responsibilities is a priority. Another great example will be when you explain to your kids that though you lust after a particular watch you want to wait till you save enough to purchase it.

Teaching Charity

Learning to help the less fortunate is one of the biggest graces that a child can possess. Involve your kids in charitable events and acts from an early age so that they can understand their responsibility towards society. You can enroll children in community work programs as this will teach kids that they have a responsibility towards bettering the society they exist it. The exposure to kindness and charity will definitely make your child into a better and more responsible human being.
It is very important to teach kids the importance of being responsible right from early childhood. If they follow such values in childhood, they will definitely follow them for their lifetime. Being responsible is one of the important virtues needed to be successful in life.
