My friend from Delhi loves shopping. Especially so when she arrives in Mumbai. Last year, when she had come down, she invited me to lunch. She asked me to come at 1:30 p.m. as she had an appointment with the dentist at 12:30 p.m. When I arrived, he son, Sameer, greeted me at the door saying, “Mama’s not at home.” Although I knew she was at the dentist, I tried to pick up a conversation with this little 4 year old. So I asked him, “Where has your mummy gone?” “Shopping!”, he answered.

My 5 year old daughter, Latika, wanted to know how I knew that my sister was going to have a baby? So I pointed out her big tummy, saying, “the baby grows in the stomach, and when it is big enough, it comes out.” That evening, we encountered a fat man in the lift, when we went to visit my mother. My little one gaped at his stomach for a few minutes, and then, much to his embarrassment, and mine said, “look mummy, this man is going to have a baby.”

Last Saturday night I had to baby sit my little brother. But alas, I was invited to a fantastic party next door. So after much thinking, I decided to attend for just one hour, with him in tow. My friend, Subhash was mixing drinks for everyone, and offered my little brother a mocktail. He loved the Virgin Colada. Next Subhash gave him a Virgin Mary, all under my strict supervision. My brother lapped it up. After which I forgot all about him and started enjoying myself. When the music stopped, a s
