Dealing with fibroids

Fibroids can result in premature deliveries or frequent miscarriages. Know the types of fibroids, symptoms of fibroids and treatment options to treat fibroids. Dealing with fibroids will be easier through the right diagnosis.

Fibroids are abnormal tumor growth inside or on the reproductive system of women. They are mostly found in women within the age group of 30-50. They are also known as eiomyomas, myomas, fibromas, and fibromyomas. Fibroids grow slowly and stop growing or may even shrink after menopause. This abnormal growth of mass of tissues can cause danger in certain cases. Continue reading to find out more about what are the symptoms of uterine fibroids and its treatment.

What are fibroids?

It is a growth taking place in or on the womb that is uterus of a woman. It can be small or big muscle fiber growth in the uterus. Though the main cause of fibroids is a subject under study, oestrogen is considered responsible for it. Hormonal imbalance or genetic reasons may also be responsible for uterine fibroids. Women with the problem of obesity, over weight and delayed pregnancy have more chances of getting affected by fibroids. Being a tumor, fibrosis does not cause any type of cancer.
It may cause infertility. in women and premature delivery or miscarriage due to its growth. It can result in complications like anemia and urination problems. It can also cause harm to reproductive system. It can be diagnosed and treated with the help of Hysteroscopy and other treatments and surgeries. The methods like womb check, MRI scan, Ultra sound and endometrial biopsy are helpful for the diagnosis and treatment of fibroids.

Symptoms of fibroids

Some women do not experience any symptoms of fibroids, but there are a few symptoms which help to diagnose fibroids. Here are some of the common symptoms of fibroids.
  • Painful menstrual period
  • Heavy bleeding during menstrual periods
  • Increased urination
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Painful intercourse
  • Constipation and problems like piles causing difficulty in passage of urine
  • Frequent miscarriages

Types of fibroids

Fibroids are distinguished according to the areas where they grow in uterus. Here are four different types of fibroids which grow in uterus.
  • Intramural fibroids are commonly diagnosed type of fibroids which grow inside the wall of the uterus.
  • Subserous fibroids are those which grow on the outermost layer of the uterus wall and can also grow on stalks which are known as Pedunculated fibroids.
  • Submucous fibroid grows into the womb. It grows on the muscle below the internal layer of the womb. Its growth can also take place on stalks.
  • Cervical fibroid is difficult to remove without harm as it grows near the neck of uterus.

Dealing with fibroids

Treating fibroids require clear understanding about what type of fibroids are they and in what number. It also depends upon the symptoms experienced by the women. Here are some of the surgeries that are used for treating fibroids.
Abdominal Myomectomy
This surgery is used to remove Intramural as well as Subserous fibroids. This is an open surgery and causes weakness. Undergoing this surgery does not affect future pregnancies.
Hysteroscopic Myomectomy
It is removing fibroids in womb through vagina. After undergoing Hysteroscopic Myomectomy there is no need to stay in hospital. Fertility is not affected by Hysteroscopic Myomectomy.
Uterine Artery Embolisation
It is illustrious as UAE treatment. It is a treatment for reducing uterine fibroids but it is not useful for removing them. As this treatment involves radiation it can affect pregnancy and can prove harmful.
Laparoscopic Myomectomy
This treatment is used to remove small fibroids by making holes in abdomen. Fertility is not affected by this procedure as it is safe. The recovery after this treatment does not take time.
Hysterectomy
This surgery is used mainly after menopause as after this surgery a woman can not have children. In this surgery an abdomen is cut and complete uterus is removed. This surgery requires a longer recovery period.
As prevention is always better than cure, you should try to prevent Uterine fibroid by eating lots of green vegetables and fruits. It can also be prevented by increase in intake of iron and avoiding red meat. Regular exercise will also help preventing fibroid. Stay away from obesity and eat low fat diet to avoid dangers of uterine fibroids.
