Top 10 Strategies for Disciplining Kids
Parents want their child to behave properly always and for this they take all kinds of steps and work out traditional and revolutionary strategies. Read on to learn about the top 10 strategies for disciplining kids.
Parents find disciplining their children one of the most difficult jobs. But the fact is that there are some strategies that actually work and help you discipline your child effectively without making a lot of fuss and aggravation.
One of the facts that most of the parents should be aware of is that every child goes through a meltdown situation and it is actually the responsibility of the parents to figure out what went wrong and also, how to handle it.
As a parent it is your responsibility to shape your child’s behaviour and help them make good choices every day. Here are some strategies to help you have a positive influence on your child’s behaviour while staying within the context of loving relationship with your child.

Top 10 Strategies for Disciplining Kids

Have a quick look at the top 10 strategies for disciplining children.

1. Form a Set of Rules

Prevention is better than cure. So, before kids misbehave, you should make the rules clear to your children. Make sure your expectations are clear as well as match perfectly with the age and capacity of your child.

2. Praise Kids on Good Behaviour

Keep in mind that your manner should be always positive and you should also not forget to appreciate when kids do what you ask for. Genuine appreciation works wonders especially in the case of kids. It also boosts self-esteem in your child. Children actually look forward to the appreciation and acknowledgement of their achievements. They will work hard to keep up to meeting your expectations.

3. Be Firm but Fair

When you will establish some simple rules, children will understand their limits. You should set reasonable and enforceable rules and follow them consistently. When you will be consistent you will be able to focus on important things.

4. Keep Yourself Cool

As a parent it is very important that you should not raise your voice when giving instructions or yell at your kids when anything goes wrong. If you want your children to know what your business is, just turn on a serious tone and convey your message or warn them from repeating such behaviour.

5. Establish Limits

Children should be able to handle and take care of their behaviour to certain extent. For this you need to set boundaries so that it is clear for your child what your expectations are. This will also send a message to your child that you believe in your child and he or she will do as directed.

6. Distract or Redirect Attention

Sometimes children, especially small kids, do not follow instructions. This is the time when you need to distract your child and redirect her to something that is age appropriate and suitable.

7. Ignore

Sometimes children misbehave purposely. This is when you need to ignore it so that your child knows that when he or she is going to behave like that, you are not going to pay attention. Since the misbehaviour was just to draw your attention, it will stop knowing it would work the other way.

8. Time Out

Time out is an effective and proven strategy for disciplining children without hurting them. This means that you simply need to remove your child from the situation for a specific period of time. Make sure you do this keeping in mind the age and type of misbehaviour of your child. There is one thing that you should avoid and that is, talking in between the time out period.

9. Withhold the Privileges

Holding back the privileges or grounding your child for some time is one of the best ways to discipline your child in teenage. This works well when your child outgrows the traditional time out strategy.

10. Make Kids Aware of Natural Consequences

Sometimes simply making your child aware of the consequences will be just enough. Also, if your child is detained or made to stand out of the class in school for misbehaving or talking back to the teacher, let her face that. Often this works as a lesson for the child.
One of the biggest mistakes that most parents make is by considering discipline as punishing children when they do anything wrong. Discipline means to teach, to prepare your child to know what to do and how to behave in different situations.
Effective discipline helps keep children out of danger and makes them feel safe and secure. It teaches children to understand and care for others and help them develop a sense of responsibility. Teaching children helps them learn about values and stay happy as well as well adjusted. Children also develop emotional self-control and self-direction. Just remember what your child can do and what she cannot.

How to discipline children? What are the common discipline mistakes which parents make? Is it ok to spank or yell at kids while disciplining them? Discuss here.
