Effective Parenting Skills

It is very challenging to imbibe effective parenting skills easily. Here are some guidelines to enhance your parenting skills to raise happy, healthy and responsible children.

Parenting a kid has never been an easy task. There are so many opinions and options on how to raise a kid and the “right” way to bring up a child that we are more often than not, utterly confused on what indeed is the right method.

You will have a horde of relatives, well wishers and other parents, who scream to have gone through and done that, along with media, which is always eager to provide opinion on what should be your guidelines. But as most experts and parents would say, it is basically instinctively decided on what ought to be the correct approach.

There is nothing to get overwhelmed. Here are some simple facts that will help you manage and hone your parenting skills with ease:

Understand the Situation Before Arriving at the Conclusion

When we come across situations where parents are simply unable to get along with their kids, are found to stem from the fact that they have been unable to assess the situation correctly. This understanding is expected from parents as they are mature individuals and obviously more mentally evolved than the kid.

The children behave erratically as they are over stimulated. They appear to be wired due to this very fact that they are being exposed to the outside world with great speed and thus overwhelmed with so many aspects and facets that they discover each day, consciously or unconsciously. So as parents, it falls upon you to put yourself in their shoes and understand that they need support for mental stability at this age. Do not be judgmental when faced with a situation that is not to your liking. Rather try to look at the situation from their point of view.

Communicate With Your Children

This means that you need to communicate often and more clearly in order to be a great parent. You are the first people that the child has known since he has started developing his senses. Therefore, you are the closest people that the child has known since birth. This is ample reason for you to be the best friend of your kid.

Make the kid feel comfortable whenever he is communicating with you. Help the kid share his feelings and thoughts with ease. The manner in which you interact with your kid will ensure that the child does not feel uncomfortable in talking and sharing his inner feelings with you. Be casual and friendly. Even if you discover that the child is not thinking or acting in the right manner, refrain from being reproachful. Such an attitude will drive the child away from you emotionally.

Effective Parenting Needs Patience

This is perhaps the most important aspect of effective parenting. Kids naturally have a volatile temperament. The reason being, that they are growing up in an extremely stimulating environment. With new discoveries made every minute, they are constantly overwhelmed with the facts and realities of life. So it is quite natural that they will time and again falter with what is desired of them in terms of correct action and behaviour. So you need to explain them on where they are going wrong. Explain to them in a manner and attitude that drives your point but at the same time, you are not apprehended as aloof, inconsiderate and overtly strict. Now be patient as your kid takes his time in understanding your point. Repeat yourself as required.

Finally, make sure that you lead through example. Kids learn their first lessons from their immediate environment. And you are the principle character in his immediate environment. Do remember that you are constantly being watched. Even if unconsciously the kid always is noticing you, the way you are talking, behaving, doing certain actions or the way you are conducting yourself. Kids are great imitators too. They take a hint regarding their behaviour and actions primarily on what they find happening around them. So be careful that you do not end up giving wrong signals to the kid!

Role playing with your child is another method to teach your children proper behavior without resorting to the use of punishments or consequences. Each and every time you practice doing the right thing in a situation with your child; you increase the chances for their success and decrease the likelihood that your child will see that problem behavior in the future

Parents have to prepare themselves for times like these and learn to keep their cool. There are times when children will make their parents so furious that the parents get caught up in the moment and as a result are not able to think properly. The parents must be aware of what is going on around them, they must know their limits to which the child pushes, and redirect situations back in focus to properly respond

Effective parenting includes developing and clarifying clear expectations, staying calm in the midst of turmoil when your child gets upset, consistently follow through with positive and negative consequences, being a positive role model, role playing corrective behaviors and lastly, praising your child for his behavior.
