5 Signs that Your Child is Spoiled

5 Signs that Your Child is Spoiled

It is necessary for parents to control the spoilt behaviour of children before it is too late. Therefore, parents must identify the signs of spoilt behaviour and take right measure. Read on to learn about the 5 sings that your child is spoiled.

Every parent wants to prevent their kids from being spoilt but few are actually successful. A spoilt kid has the full potential of becoming a spoilt adult so it is your duty as a parent to discourage spoilt behaviour in your children. Here are some signs that will let you know whether your kids are spoilt and also tell you how to tackle different kinds of spoilt behaviour in a mature and effective way.

Throwing Constant Tantrums

Children are entitled to tantrums and the best and the most obedient kids will throw tantrums once in a while. However, if the tantrums keep on occurring in a pattern and do not cease even if attempts are made to placate the child then it is a sign of the kid being spoilt. Also when tantrums are being thrown for no apparent reason then it signals a major problem.
As a parent you must not lose your cool. Listen to your kid and make him or her understand that you know the problem but you find the behaviour unacceptable. However angry your kid is help him or her find out the correct words to express discontent, lack of satisfaction etc. You can withdraw certain privileges or favours (that were previously given) to make your child understand that what he or she is doing is wrong.

Hitting and Grabbing Things

Most kids are highly territorial in nature and they really know how to mark their own things. Being possessive is natural but when your kid starts grabbing things unfairly and then hitting other kids (or other adults) to express displeasure then you have got a serious issue. This kind of behaviour means that your child is soon going to be bestowed with the title “brat”.
There are two ways in which you can tackle this problem. Firstly help your kid store away their most valuable possessions or toys before the playmates arrive so that any potential squabbles are averted. However gently remind your kid that sharing is a virtue and not all toys can be stashed away before friends arrive. Even if your kid is upset about sharing remember that the annoyance is only a step in the process of acceptance.

Whining All the Time

It is more irritating to hear your kid whine than any other disturbing noise like chalk on board or police siren etc. It is okay when the whining happens on a day that is genuinely discomforting like a haircut day or a wait in the queue day. However, when the whining happens for reasons like wanting to have ice cream for breakfast or not wanting to do homework then these are signs of your kid being spoilt.
As a parent you need to understand that kids are experts in the art of manipulation and when you give in to the series of demands just because they are whining you are encouraging the spoilt behaviour. What you need to do is to stick to your decision of not giving in even if your kid is super upset.

Complaining Constantly

If your kid shows constant signs of complaining then it is a sign of being spoilt and poor tolerance levels. Poor tolerance leads to unnecessary demands which escalate into unreasonable behaviour. It is very difficult to gratify a child who has understood that all he or she has to do is to complain a lot in order to immediately get access to a new toy or a desired object.
As a parent you need to teach your kids the difference between what he or she wants and what he or she needs. It is actually difficult to instil this lesson but the earlier you start the surer you will be of reverting the spoilt behaviour.

Rude Talk

When kids start talking back in aggressive tones to adults and displaying rude behaviour then it is a sure sign of spoilt behaviour. Children need to be emphatically taught that it is not Okay to be rude to family members, guests and relatives.
As a parent you need to be quick to reprimand your kid. Take your kid aside and let him or her understand that it is not acceptable to be rude. Saying something like this is not a very kind thing to say may actually work the trick.

How to know if a child is spoiled? How to avoid spoiling a child? What measures should be taken by parents if a child is spoiled? Discuss here.
