Remedies for Exam Stress in Children

Stress during exams cannot be avoided as there is a constant pressure on children to perform well. If some simple remedies are followed it is possible to cope with stress easily. Read on to find remedies for managing stress in children.

When there is fear, threat or challenge, the body gets stressed out. This is a natural reaction of the body’s mechanism to deal with the situation. According to experts it can be considered as a positive response when it is at an initial level as it informs the body for the tough situation ahead. Accordingly we become alert and know what the aspects that we need to focus on.

But on the other hand, when the stress goes beyond a certain limit it rings danger for the entire body system wrecking havoc in the daily routine, messing up with the sleep timings, dietary schedule and above all makes one to lose focus and concentration.

Exam stress is unavoidable as there is a target to meet, pressure to perform and meet certain expectations. With the aid of some simple remedies one can counter exam stress with ease:

Inculcate Self-Belief in Children

It is more often the lack of confidence that results in persistent stress. Make sure that the student has a positive approach towards the exams and that he also has the belief that he has it in him to perform well. Once the student is confident than there is no reason why he cannot perform well as all the factors are in his favor, there will be an amazing self belief and stress will no longer be there.

By factors, I mean that the student has attended all the classes, understood the lessons and practiced the exercises and also cleared the doubts. The belief that he is in a class just because he deserve to be there, must be inculcated. So, it is all about making the student keep calm and appearing for the exams with a steady mind. Students should learn to believe that exams are just a means to ascertain that they have done the lessons well and so one should approach it that way. It is by far the most practical and easiest remedy to counter and banish exam stress.

Do Not be Obsessed with Perfection

There are a lot of students and parents alike who feel that every grade should be the highest possible grade and every mark must be the highest mark anything below that 100% is not substantial. This approach needs to be changed. More often than not this tremendous desire to attain the highest position boils down as extreme pressure. The easiest remedy to this problem is to get practical.

Just try to understand that one should have the objective to perform well and do justice to one’s potential. But it is not logically possible for all ten ‘good’ students in class to attain the same percentage. Respect individuality and appreciate the qualities that are distributed in each student. Building such expectations is simply unnecessary stress that can easily be avoided.

Help to Solve the Problems

Remember self confidence stems from good preparation. So, if there is anything that the student is not acquainted with in the course material or certain parts of any chapter if are not understood then make sure that his basic concepts regarding the chapter are clear. Try to clarify his doubts and it can also be cleared with his teacher in class or tuition teacher.

There are students who feel embarrassed to speak out their doubts in class as they fear being ridiculed by peers. But in the process, the concepts remain cloudy and they face a lot of problems in understanding the chapters or solving the exercises. All these amount to great deal of stress as their self confidence is not there and they feel a lot of pressure as they are sure that they have not understood the respective chapter that well and are apprehensive whether they will be able to deal with the questions in the exams if they happen to be from those very chapters.
