How to Deal with Exam Stress

How to Deal with Exam Stress

Exam stress is one of the common causes of poor performance in children. Read on to know how to deal with exam stress.

With the pressure of the completion of syllabus and studies, exam stress is a common thing in the student’s life. At times the level of stress gets so much that the performance of the student gets affected. Contrary to popular belief, underperformance is not always related to lack of proper preparation. It has been often found that even a well-prepared student happens to perform below par just because he or she fall a victim to exam stress.

There is no avoiding the fact that exams are an indistinguishable part of a student’s life that will carry on their professional life as well, that is, in the coming years.

Therefore, it is very important that this exam stress is countered with care so as to ascertain that the performance levels are maintained; especially, when it is solely performance that decides a lot of things in a student’s life. This is exactly where stress management techniques come handy.

Plan Ahead, Plan Well

This is perhaps the most basic and simplest of all. Before exams there are few basic points that one needs to remember. First, the syllabus must be covered so that no part of the respective subject is left untouched. Secondly, due attention must be paid to all the chapters of a given subject. Needless to add that the subjects in which the child is weak need more attention than the rest of the subjects.

Thirdly, all the exercises must be completed and finally, there should be ample time for revision. So, all these require some serious planning. The student needs to understand that these are logical steps that ensure that he is in a good stead when the exam dates are near. The planning can be done by the individual student himself or if required the parent or the teacher can chip in with some vital suggestions and help.

The First Step of Planning

Prepare a study chart. The chart should have all the three basic points that are mentioned in the above paragraph. Just making a chart would not suffice; the student has to make it a point to follow it strictly. Exams are a serious affair and if one is serious about the grades, the rules to success must also be followed. As the study hours are divided and allotted to various subjects make sure that all the whims and fancies take a backseat as there is no place for leniency. But at the same time, the approach should be slightly flexible.

Say, if the student is done with history lessons and has practiced all the dates and feels exhausted to start on with the math practice, then you he can take a break. Students should get engaged in some activity that relaxes the mind and brain and he can get back to the usual routine. It is the student’s own seriousness and dedication that will prompt him on what should be the ideal course of action at a given situation. Stress would be automatically relieved.

Positive Thinking When Revising

Revisions are mainly done through reading, writing, testing and discussion with teachers and peers. It is possible that even after completing all these steps, the student feels stressed out due to fear that he is perhaps underprepared. As a stress management technique it is important that the student has a positive approach during the pre exam days and for that matter always. He needs to have belief in himself and feel that all the honest efforts will surely yield results. It is also advisable to solve model questions and using a timer to ensure that he is well on the track. Stress would take a backseat.

Resort to Stress Busters

As a part of stress management techniques, yoga and meditation help to focus the mind and induce relaxation. A light nutritious diet keeps the metabolism healthy and body relaxed. Adequate and proper sleep hours enhance the alertness and the body will be energised for the routine. Some time out for relaxation also keeps the mind fresh and helps in concentrating during the study hours.

It is possible to deal with exam stress easily if simple stress management techniques are followed. Regular practice of stress management technique will keep stress at bay.

Planning ahead and planning well will really reduce the stress of kids. I used to plan one or two weeks before my kid’s exam. This helps her to concentrate well on her studies and also to revise during her exams. Now my daughter is in grade 5 and I follow this method from her grade 1. Once I have shared this with the other parents during a gathering session in her school (Orchids International) and sme of them found it useful.
