Sex During the Last Trimester

Sex During the Last Trimester

Discomfort in having sex during last trimester can be prevented with an adequate knowledge. Learn about comfort position and means of intimacy to connect better with your spouse.
Sex during pregnancy is not a problem in normal cases. As long as there is no problem in the manner your pregnancy is proceeding, you can have sex as much as you wish to. During the first trimester, there will be immense hormonal fluctuations along with nausea and persistent tiredness. These factors might cap your desires for a while, but by the second trimester there will be an enhanced blood flow in your breasts and sexual organs which will revive your desire for sex.

The third trimester is marked by a fair amount of weight gain along with an array of other symptoms like back ache which might not make you feel like making love that often. But if there are absolutely no complications in your pregnancy and you are in a mood for some action, there is no harm to you or your baby if you indulge in sex.

Sex Does Not Harm the Baby

It is a misconception that sex might harm the baby inside you. You need to have a clear idea on what is happening to and in your body. Your baby is covered by the amniotic fluid inside the uterus. Besides, there is also a mucus plug that blocks the cervix throughout the pregnancy period. So there is no chance of your baby getting hurt or affected if you choose to have sex during your third trimester too.

Choose a Comfort Position

There may not be any such problem with having sex, but the protruding abdomen and the heavy belly might require some attention during the act. Ensure that you are in a comfortable position. Here couples need to experiment and find out about what suits them best. It is found that most women prefer the sideways position instead of her lying on the back. You can also choose the standing position and anything else as long as you are deriving pleasure and are feeling comfortable.

Factors or Concerns

Use Condoms – This will protect you from possible infections that can affect your pregnancy and your baby’s well-being.

It is recommended to be cautious and avoid sex if:

  • You stand the risk of a preterm labour.
  • There is unexplained vaginal bleeding.
  • You notice a leaking of the amniotic fluid.
  • Your cervical opening is covered partially or completely by the placenta.

You May Love, Without Love-Making

Couples if required can explore various means of intimacy that need not culminate or involve sexual penetration. You can spend some lone time with each other; go in for kissing, cuddling and physical stimulation too. In most cases it is found that even if the desire for sex is there, when you are really attempting it, you may not end up feeling like going ahead with it, or do not enjoy it at all. There are various reasons apart from the possible physical discomfiture. During the third trimester when you are almost close to your delivery date, you are gradually getting conditioned to think constantly about your baby. The status, and the change in life and routine after that, etc., might take off that steam of lovemaking for a while.

As said there is no harm in having sex, but follow your doctor's advice. If he advises you against it, then it is your best interest to avoid it until after delivery. During the entire pregnancy term, the woman may feel a myriad of emotions and psychological state that will directly affect her desire to have sex. It is desirable to have an open communication with your partner about what you feel comfortable in. A bit of support, care and understanding of your woman’s needs and emotions will help the man not only to connect better, but also to enhance mutual trust in the relationship.
