The period of pregnancy, along with a lot of happiness brings a lot of changes for which the mother may not always be ready. The body experiences changes that have a drastic effect in the daily life of the expectant mother. With the changes, it becomes important for the woman to remain healthy in order to help the body mechanism come to terms with these numerous changes. Sleep, being an important factor, contributes a lot in the well being of the mother.

Insomnia during Pregnancy

Insomnia, or the lack of sleep, is a condition that is experienced by several expectant mothers all over the world. Insomnia can be caused due to countless reasons. While some women complain of leg cramps throughout the night, others feel the need to rush to the bathroom occasionally. There are many who are too excited by the prospects of having a baby and hence find themselves unable to sleep.
Around the world, 8 out of 10 women have complained of insomnia. Even with a decent company around, it is no good for the health of the mother if she stays awake the entire night. In these circumstances, it becomes important for her to get a good sleep by beating insomnia.

Ways of Fighting Insomnia

Here are some ways which can be followed for fighting insomnia during pregnancy.

Relaxing before Sleep

Relaxation before sleep is important to beat insomnia. Practicing a ritual before sleep helps in this case. Some of the rituals can be taking a warm bath, reading a chapter from your favourite book, having a foot massage, or anything that helps calm the anxiety levels. When these rituals are made a part of your daily routine, they can enhance your sleeping cycle, and eventually make insomnia history.

Playing Soothing Music

When in bed, it is advisable to have some meditative music playing in the background. The music is instrumental in putting you to a peaceful sleep. This kind of music also provides a soothing effect, helping you release the accumulated tension inside the body.

Having Comfortable Ambience

The room temperature should be set to suit your convenience. Dark curtains can prove to be helpful if you are looking to curtail the light. Some women also make the use of sound machines to cut away the unnecessary sound of traffic.

Doing Gentle Exercises

Ideally, you’ll be asleep after 15-20 minutes of getting into bed. If this does not work, one can try a gentle exercise like arm moving. A walk across the hallway can also help you to sleep better.
There is no reason to feel afraid if you do not fall asleep easily. Worrying excessively would only worsen the situation. If the problem of insomnia persists for more than a week, consult a specialist. During pregnancy, it is not advisable to consume sleeping pills as it may be harmful for the baby. No medication should be taken without proper consultation or prescription by an obstetrician.

What Could be the Cause of Insomnia?

While majority of the specialists around the world link insomnia to stress and anxiety, there is a possibility that it could be because of lack of Vitamin-B. Leafy vegetables, cereals, and juices can prove beneficial to overcome the deficiency of Vitamin-B.
Herbal treatment is not advisable during pregnancy to cure insomnia. However, women have opted for gentle oil massages given to them by their spouse to drift into a decent sleep. Unless it is not made a habit of, oil massage can prove to be really helpful for curing insomnia. Although, gentle massage may not be harm, women must consult their doctor before undergoing any kind of massage during pregnancy. There are visualization exercises that have proved effective, but in the end it all comes down to the expectant mother, and on how she wishes to go about curing her insomnia.
The cure of insomnia lies in relaxing one’s mind, following a healthy diet pattern, and exercising regularly. A daily 8-10 hour sleep is the first step towards a safe and healthy pregnancy.
