The festival of Diwali starts from Dhanteras and the main festival of lights, Diwali falls on the third day. It is the day important for Laxmi Puja and is entirely dedicated to the propitiation of Goddess Laxmi. Despite of the fact that this day falls on Amavasya, which has the darkest night; it is regarded as highly auspicious.

When is Laxmi Pujan Done?

Laxmi Puja day falls on the dark night of Amavasya. Even though the night is dark, people make it all the more bright by lighting hundreds of Diyas in line and they offer a large Diya with lights in all the four directions to Goddess Laxmi so that their life is filled with light from all directions.
It is believed that Goddess Laxmi comes to earth that day and blesses those who light Diyas on this dark night and worship her from heart. She walks through the green fields and showers her blessings on people in abundance and blesses them with prosperity as well.

Requirements of Laxmi Pujan on Diwali

Goddess Laxmi is the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. It is very important to keep your house spotlessly clean at least that day. Make sure you too wear clean clothes and offer prayers from a clean and pure heart as well. It is believed that since Goddess Laxmi prefers cleanliness, she enters the cleanest house that day. This is also one of the reasons why the broom is worshipped in some places that day with turmeric and vermilion. Lamps are lit in the evening in order to light up the path and make it easy for Goddess to enter into the house.

Importance of Laxmi Pujan during Diwali

Laxmi is the Goddess of wealth and prosperity and she is worshipped for promotion, success and personal virtues. People worship her for spiritual prosperity and material abundance. It is believed that she helps remove the troubles that prevent people from moving on spiritual path or carry on their businesses.
On Diwali, Laxmi is worshipped along with Lord Ganesh, who symbolizes auspiciousness and wisdom. He is the destroyer of evils and obstacles and blesses his devotees with success. He is also believed to be the God of education and knowledge along with wisdom and wealth.

Why do we Perform Laxmi Puja on Diwali?

Since wealth is the most important component for maintenance and progress in our lives, people do Laxmi Pujan to please Goddess Laxmi who is considered as the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Here, wealth does not only signify more money. It means seeking abundance in knowledge, skills and talents. Laxmi is the energy that demonstrates the complete material and spiritual well-being of a person.
The connection of Laxmi is done to the goal. It is believed that by worshipping Laxmi you can achieve the real goal of your life because she is the Shakti that directs you to your source. Usually, when people forget that they are part of the entire creation, they start feeling small and insecure. AdiLaxmi connects us to that source and helps bring strength and calmness to us.

What Goddess Laxmi Symbolizes?

According to the Hindu Puranas, Laxmi emerged from the water along with the nectar during the churning of ocean done by the Gods and Demons. Water is a symbol of love and Laxmi is depicted as sitting on a lotus which is floating in water. Lotus is the symbol of dispassion.
A droplet of water moves freely on the lotus petals, which indicates that when we are not attached to wealth, life is light like a flower. Also, it is believed that this type of wealth is life supporting and brings prosperity and abundance.
Wealth should be moving like water. Water loses its purity when it is stagnant and so is the case with wealth. The usefulness and value of wealth is highest when it is shared and is moving.
Diwali is the festival of lights and it is important you honour all aspects of wealth in life that day.
