Diabetes is a common lifestyle disease found in most people including children. Though diabetes is now common in children yet people are unaware of many facts on diabetes. Awareness about diabetes can help in its treatment. Read on some facts on diabetes.
Diabetes is today one of the most occurring chronic diseases in kids today. The primary fact regarding diabetes is that the manner in which the child metabolises his food gets negatively affected.

As a result the glucose levels in the child’s blood stream shoots up because a major part of his daily consumption is broken down into glucose; which also happens to be the main source of energy in the human body. When the levels of glucose rise uncontrollably, all of it is definitely not required by the body.

Additional Glucose Remains Untapped

Only a certain amount of glucose can be utilised, that is in the presence of the right amount of insulin which is produced by a healthy pancreas. So when a child gets affected by diabetes, the amount of insulin produced by her body is not in the desired quantity.

Alternatively, it can also be the case that the kid has certain cells in his body that responds to the insulin in an improper manner. Thereby, the extra glucose gets accumulated in the blood stream of the child and this goes out of his body when he passes urine. This way his body gets deprived of the essential energy that is his regular requirement and ends up feeling fatigued.

Lifestyle Factors Encourage the Development of Diabetes

The current lifestyle in well to do households gives all its members along with the children a very sedentary life. Children during their developmental years have a high metabolism rate and they need to indulge in a fair amount of physical activity that renders an all-round development of his body and mind.

The global endemic of diabetes in children is a considered to be a direct result of persistent physical inactivity that results in obesity and concurrently in the development of diabetes. The condition is also coupled with high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Expected Rise in Death Toll

In the next years, the death toll in children due to diabetes is expected to rise by as much as 50%. In the upper-middle class section, the rise is expected to be around 80%. Currently around 80% of death in children due to diabetes is being found from the lower and middle income families too.

Incorrect Diagnosis

Unfortunately, a significant number of deaths in children is caused by diabetes but is often wrongly recorded as death caused by kidney failure or due to heart ailments.

Prevalence of Type 1 & 2 Diabetes

Juvenile or type 1 diabetes occurs due to the inability of the child’s body to produce the adequate amount of insulin. Type 2 diabetes occurs due to the ineffective use of the naturally produced insulin. Type 2 is more common compared to type 1. Type 2 in children was very rare, but in the recent years there has been a significant rise in the type 2 cases.

Awareness about the early signs and symptoms of diabetes in children must be inculcated in the parents. Then every section of the society should have access to primary health services, only then can this endemic be effectively controlled. Diabetes is children can definitely be controlled and prevented by maintaining a healthy food habit and leading a physically active lifestyle.
