It is basically the traditional food of the people residing on the land adjoining the Mediterranean Sea, primarily belonging to Greece and Italy. The diet has a fair amount of fatty foods and natural oils that are healthy in nature. Olive oil is the primary ingredient of all the staple dishes.

Mediterranean Diet is believed to be healthy for the heart and comprises of a huger amount of fruits, vegetables, fishes and sea-food. The fat consumed belongs to the category of the healthy monounsaturated fats. According to the American Heart Association, this diet is very beneficial for people suffering from heart ailments and types of cardiovascular diseases.

Common Disadvantages of Mediterranean Diet

Although the Mediterranean Diet has plenty of positive features, one needs to note the various aspects of this diet too. Here are certain disadvantages that one should be careful of while embarking on this type of diet:

Risky for Hyper-Sensitive System

You should do fair amounts of research before you actually start with the diet. Make a list of all the qualities of the diet that are positive or negative for you. Every diet plan for that matter has certain qualities that align with an individual body type and system. This should be the criteria of selecting a particular diet. The primary side effect comprises of a wrong choice. You might have a hyper-sensitive system or suffering from an ailment that makes this Mediterranean Diet an inappropriate choice.

This Diet Plan is Not Cost Effective

As you make this list, you must highlight the main benefit and the risk factor. There are countless studies that indicate the Mediterranean Diet to be healthy for the heart and it also brings down the risk of the development of heart diseases. But the side-effects of the cons of the diet are that it may not ne very easy on your pocket. The cost of the food is pretty high. It is also not very easy to obtain the traditional food items for people residing in various corners of the world. Then again certain fruits and vegetables are available only on certain seasons.

There are Many other Alternative Diet Plans

It has been observed that people on the Mediterranean Diet eventually happen to feel that there can be better alternatives available or that the negative aspects of this diet is far more than the positive ones. This is of course a relative observation and can thus be counted as a side-effect of this diet. This can be true for every other diet plan and must not be construed as a negative aspect related to this particular diet only. The side-effect actually comprises of the individual’s inability to adhere to his decision and the inconsistency in his comprehensions.

It Has Few Benefits as Compared to Disadvantages

If you choose this diet only to do well to your heart, there are other effective means as well. It is all about adapting life-style measures like engaging in physical exercises on a regular basis, quitting the habit of smoking and alcohol consumption and having an overall healthy diet. Just embarking on a Mediterranean Diet will not serve the purpose.

The main component of this Mediterranean diet is Olive oil. This diet is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids which are good for the body. This diet aims at weight loss in a healthy way. Though this diet plan appears to be good and healthy there are lots of disadvantages attached to it. One should always consult a nutritionist before embarking on this diet plan.
