Coping with Bacterial Infections in Kids

Bacterial infection can cause a lot of discomfort to kids. Read on to know about the causes, symptoms and treatment for bacterial infections in kids.

Sometimes it seems that even if you take lots of precautions, smart bugs find their way into your child’s body through one way or another. But taking precautionary measures can help.
Parents of small kids are often extra cautious when it comes to the well-being of their child. They might take lot of precautions to prevent their child from any kind of infection, but it may happen sometime. If the child becomes unwell with bacterial infection, you may not have an idea how serious it can turn out to be. Therefore treating the infection as early as possible becomes your priority.

Causes of Bacterial Infection in Kids

Let us take a look some of the common causes of bacterial infection in children.

1. Infection during Birth

Bacteria thrive in mother’s birth canal and during birth a new born can swallow or breathe in the fluid which may cause infection in lungs and blood. The child may become ill during childbirth or after few days.

2. Sudden Change in Weather

When weather changes, young kids are likely to get ill. It becomes practically difficult to figure out how much warm and protected you should keep your child.

3. Improper Intake of Nutrition

When kids do not take nutritious food or those who are picky eaters, have more chances of becoming infected by bacteria.

4. Food Borne Infections

Eating out without proper caution or eating contaminated food, in any case, will cause bacterial infections.

Symptoms of Bacterial Infection

Here are some of the common symptoms of bacterial infection.
• High fever or irregular increase and decrease of body temperature
• Poor appetite
• Excess sleepiness
• Rapid breathing
• Change in normal behaviour
• Irritability
• Pale face
• Rashes on skin
• Running nose
• Diarrhoea and vomiting

Treatment for Bacterial Infection in Kids

Usually, doctors prescribe antibiotics to treat bacterial infections. Along with the antibiotics, your paediatrician will suggest some supportive actions. It is very important to follow the instructions given by the doctor and give your child the right dosage and complete the course of medicine. Sometimes if fever subsides and the child feels good, parents stop giving medicine. This might cause re-eruption of infection. Repeated infections make kids weak and more prone to diseases and different kinds of other infections also.
It is good to keep your child warm and protected when your child is suffering from any kind of bacterial infection. Make sure you do not add layers of clothes on your child’s body as this may cause exposure when you will remove the layers. Protect your child from sudden change of atmospheric temperature even if she gets well.

How to Protect Your Child from Future Infections

Many causes of infection need to be taken care of
• Along with maintaining personal cleanliness and hygiene, take extra care of hygiene with all the things related to your child.
• Teach your child to use hand sanitizer when soap and water is not available to disinfect her hands.
• Teach your child to avoid touching the areas commonly touched by other people.
• Reduce exposure to allergens.
• Teach your child not to share food or drinking bottle with other children especially in school.
• Use a humidifier at home to get rid from dryness inside house.
• Give nutritious and easily digestible food to your child for some days.
You can take preventive measures and try some natural remedies when your child becomes infected with some bacteria. Even though precaution is better than cure, your child might need medical advice and treatment. Look out for the signs and consult a doctor when necessary.
