Helping Children Cope with Fever

Helping Children Cope with Fever
Coping with fever can be made easy for children with some home remedies. Have a quick look at the some simple home remedies to help your child cope with fever.
Nothing can be worst than watching your children suffering from fever in the middle of the night. Sometimes parents do not feel it right to medicate their children without first having them seen by a doctor, on the top of that sometimes children become so restless that do not want to take medicines. In such cases home remedies are beneficial. Here are some tips given how to treat fever following the home remedies.

Comfortable Clothing

Fever is the natural process by which our body heals itself when attacked by germs and viruses. These germs thrive at our regular body temperature, our body by raising its temperature more than the normal temperature weakens these germs and prevent them from reproducing. But this raising of the temperature becomes very uncomfortable so it needs to be treated. The body needs to cool down so give your kids light and loose clothing to wear to help the body relax and ease out air circulation so that the temperature drops down.

Increase Fluid Intake

When your kid is suffering from high fever, increase his water intake as during this time the body loses fluid randomly and causes dehydration. To balance the body fluid it is necessary to increase the water intake. For infants it is one ounce per hour, two ounces for toddlers every hour and for older children you need to give three ounces of water intake per hour to rehydrate your children.

Bathing in Lukewarm Water

Put your child in a tub of lukewarm water and bathe him or her properly. The thermometer reading will drop down slowly. The warm shower helps in stimulating sweat that keeps the body cool. But make sure the water is not too hot as it may increase the core temperature and will cause the fever to last longer. Bathing in lukewarm water also cleanses the body which in turn reduces the risk of further bacterial or viral infections.

Sponge Down

If it is not possible to bathe your kid in the middle of the night give a warm sponge. Soak a towel in lukewarm water and sponge it over his forehead or under his arms so that it induces sweat and improves the blood circulation. This will naturally bring down the fever after some time.

Cold Compresses

Placing cool washcloths on the areas like forehead, groin and wrist where the blood vessels are close to the skin helps the body to cool down. But make sure that you do not give warm and cold treatment at the same time. If you want to give cold compresses give only cold compresses.

Change the Diet

Avoid all kinds of inflammatory foods during the fever as it may cause further inflammation or indigestion that can be very uncomfortable. Avoid refined carbohydrates like white bread and pastries; avoid fried foods, red meat and margarine like food stuffs.

Give Your Child Anti Inflammatory Foods

Fruits are always healthy so try to give your kids fruits like oranges, strawberries and cherries. Green leafy vegetables which are rich in antioxidants are also helpful. Such foods are easily absorbed by the body even when the body is weak.

Vitamin C Intake

Vitamin C serves as an important antioxidant and helps in promoting better immunity and also helps in the speedy recovery. So give your kids fruits that are rich in Vitamin C.

Give Your Kid a Bowl of Rice Water

High fever is often accompanied by diarrhoea; in such a case rice water can be very helpful in easing out the indigestion. Rice water can be prepared by boiling 1 litre of water with 2 -3 tablespoons of rice for half an hour. Then strain and give the liquid to your kid.
In addition to the above home remedies you also need to consult your doctor and follow his advices.
