Baby's Growth and Development in Week 38 (Tenth Month)

Read on know about the growth milestones that a baby is expected to achieve by 9th month 38th week of her development.

Inquisitiveness is a natural way of your baby’s development, and that can be seen well in week 38. Your baby will happily tip over laundry baskets and wastebaskets. She would take clothes off the wardrobes that is within her reach; pull books off the shelves, and clear cabinets. In this way, your baby will leave trail wherever she goes and you have to constantly clean up after her. Do not get frustrated, take ample amount of rest whenever you get a chance, and allow your baby to grow happily at her own way.

How Is Your Baby Growing?

At week 38, your baby can sit confidently. Her muscles are stronger than before. Your baby has also mastered in letting go of the furniture and standing on her own without any support for a few seconds. Your baby would like to take new risks. She may try to take few steps in a walking position and may try to hold up a toy while she is standing. You will soon find your baby standing well and start shaking her body and dancing on some groovy music at background.

Step of Independence

Your baby can start taking her steps of independence. Your baby has been practicing her move while pulling up and cruising and has strengthened her leg muscles that give her enough confidence to take the step of independence. But wait, if your baby cannot start walking, do not worry, as it is still too early. Sometimes, babies start walking early but usually they take their first steps around 12 months, or maybe some of them will not start walking until they are 18 months old, but all the hard work starts now.

Zone of Proximal Development

Week 38 is all about the zone of proximal development – this zone is a gap between what your baby can accomplish independently and what you can help her accomplish when she faces challenge to accomplish independently. For example, you help your infant to walk through that single step that she is struggling while moving from one room to the other. These helping tasks boost child’s existing abilities that she would be achieving soon independently.

Social Development

Your child would be repeating certain tricks or acts if applauded by family members and would still be flirting and interacting with strangers. Your child is also developing empathy for people around her. You would notice your baby crying if she sees other babies cry. This is a great example of your baby’s sensitivity towards other’s emotions.

She may also be learning how to comfort herself when she feels anxious or tired. You may notice that she repeatedly chooses a special toy or blanket to sleep with or hold whenever she feels those emotions.

Sign Language

Your baby is still not developmentally ready to use spoken language, so this is the best time to introduce her to the world of sign language to communicate what your baby wants or needs that might otherwise go unnoticed. Though you have to wait for few more weeks before you get a sign in return from your kid, but you can start showing your baby sign that she connects to words, like “hungry”, “more”, “help”, etc. Try to incorporate those signs regularly to boost your baby’s language development.
Your child now understands that you will not always be there by her side, so she gets attached to a certain toy or object like pacifier or her favourite blanket and would try to comfort herself by holding onto her favourite object when she feels tired or anxious. This comes from a little insecurity as your infant is learning all sorts of new things. Keep boosting your baby’s intellect by offering her the right objects, for example, a stuffed toy would be really great for her.
