Vaccination against cervical cancer provides women the protection against various strains of HPV. Find out how you can reduce the occurrence of vaginal or vulvar cancer. Cervical cancer in women is directly affects the sexual health. It is caused by sexually transmitted HPV or human papillomavirus. There has been many world wide reaserches that indicate that the occurrence of cervical cancer can be effectively reduced through vaccination. Let us first understand
cervical cancer and what the proposed vaccinations are in brief.
Cervical Cancer and Occurrence and Vaccination
There are different strains of HPV which gets spread through a singular or numerous sexual contacts. According to the Food and Drug Administration or FDA, Gardasil and Cervarix are the two vaccines that have received approval for use on patients. According to researches, the two vaccines are found to be effective in protecting girls and women before they are even exposed to the said virus. There is an added benefit too. These vaccines can also prevent or significantly reduce the occurrence of vaginal or vulvar cancer. The Gardasil vaccine is found to prevent the occurrence of genital warts in both men and women.
When Should the Vaccine be Administered?
The cervical cancer vaccine can be administered to girls as well as boys between the ages 11-12. Physicians are of the opinion that the vaccine can be given as early as the age of 9 too. The objective is to ensure that the vaccination is complete prior to the individuals engaging in sexual contact. According to the doctors and researchers, the vaccination can be suggested on girls and women as they reach the age of 26 and in men as they reach the age of 21. If the doctors feel, the vaccination in men can also take place when they reach the age of 26 too.
The Vaccination Program
Both Gardasil and Cervarix vaccinations are recommended in a series of three injections. The period of the program is generally six months. The first dose is followed by the second after a gap of 1-2 months, and the third dose is always within six months of the first dose.
Why Three Doses?
According to researchers, they are yet to conclusively state that protection can be ascertained from a lesser dose as well. Vaccination to prevent cervical cancer is still not in the final stage of research. As such, it is not possible to infer the exact antibody level that would ensure the required protection against HPV. With each clinical trial, it was observed that the antibody levels surged up with the administration of each dose of vaccine. So, three doses are recommended to ensure optimum protection for the longest time period, years, or decades.
Who Should Avoid Cervarix Vaccinations
Cervical cancer preventive vaccines are required by all women, but then they are not recommended in certain cases. Women who are into their pregnancy and individuals, who are suffering from any type of health issues, be it mild or acute are not given this vaccination. Besides, before getting vaccinated, it is highly recommended that a thorough health study is conducted so as make sure that the person is not suffering from or is prone to any type of allergy. This should include allergy towards yeast or latex too.
Finally, it is still a debatable issue on whether the vaccination would be effective in women who are already sexually active. As per research studies it has been found that if the woman is below 26 years and is sexually active, Gardasil and Cervarix are effective for only some specific strains of HPV. This means that the vaccinations would then offer limited protection. The principle point here is if the woman has more than one sexual partner, then the chances are high that she has been simultaneously been also exposed to a larger variety of HPV strains. Therefore, it is advisable to take note of sexual health as early as possible so that cervical cancer can be prevented with ease.
