Diet Tips for Preparing Body for Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a crucial time in a woman’s life. A healthy body aids in a successful pregnancy. A healthy and nutritious diet is necessary for a successful conception. Preparing the body for pregnancy requires adequate storage of vitamins and minerals. The diet should have a balanced proportion of all essential nutrients. Read on to know more.

Pregnancy is not a deal in itself, one needs to prepare the body for pregnancy. So even if one is not trying or planning to get pregnant, one should still have a clear idea on how she can actually prepare her body for pregnancy so that successful conception does not become a problem when the time comes.
Diet is one important aspect of this preparation exercise. Given below are a few diet tips:

Diet Should Enhance Fertility Levels

A balanced and a nutritious diet is extremely important at any stage in life. If you are planning pregnancy, this becomes all the more important. The three most vital aspects that play a significant role in determining a successful pregnancy are the ovulation surges, the menstrual cycles and the health of eggs. All the three are affected positively when you are having a balanced and nutritious diet. Maintaining a high fertility level is very important. So foods that aid in this regard are the whole group of healthy unsaturated fats. These include food like nuts, olive oil, avocados, etc.

Why is Diet so Important for Getting Pregnant?

While preparing the body for pregnancy, you need to note that how the resources are utilised and what are the benefits of certain food. The primary objective is to ensure that the body has an adequate storage of the essential vitamins and minerals. Given below are the basic components of a nutritious and balanced diet

  • A minimum of five portions of the seasonal fruits and vegetables are required. They are an excellent source of vitamins and fiber.
  • A certain quantity of carbohydrates and starch is also necessary. They can be easily obtained from whole grain cereals, bread and potatoes.
  • Your diet must have a fair amount of protein, which can be readily obtained from pulses, fish and meat.

  • Calcium is very important for the body and the dairy products are the best source for natural calcium. According to convenience it can be milk or yoghurt.

  • One vital point that needs to be noted is that the intake of fatty, salted and sugary food must be completed avoided while preparing the body for pregnancy.

  • There is a tendency of women to turn anemic during pregnancy and also otherwise. So it is important that they take iron rich food in plenty. They can be naturally obtained from pulses, fortified breakfast cereals, green vegetables, dried nuts and fruits along with breads and red meat.

It is commonly considered a well balanced diet can fulfill all the requirements that need to be considered for preparing the body for pregnancy. According to doctor’s advice one can go for certain supplements like iron and B12. There can be dietary concerns if the woman is vegan or is under any restricted diet.

Importance of Folic Acid During Pregnancy

The body should have enough healthy red blood cells while you are preparing it for the rigors of pregnancy. There can be serious medical concerns if the mother does not have enough folic acid as a part of her regular diet. Folic acid can reduce effectively the possibility of the baby being born with neural tube defect, that is, Spina Bifida. This point should be taken special care of as just a few weeks following the fertilisation; the development of the neural tube takes place.

Very often during the phase of neural tube development the woman may not even realise that she is pregnant. So a supplement of folic is essential right from the time that you are planning pregnancy. This can be readily obtained from green leafy vegetables, like peas and broccoli along with chickpeas and brussles apart from the supplements. The whole meal bread and the fortified breakfast cereals also contain folic acid.

While preparing the body for pregnancy, one needs to abstain from alcohol, smoking and drugs too.
