Developing Writing Skills in Kids

Developing Writing Skills in Kids

Start developing writing skills in kids at an early age so that they develop the love for writing. Here is how you can aid the development of the writing skills your child.

These days we find that less and less kids are interested in writing. They are just not much into it and this appears quite well through their classroom books. The early stuff are surely cute as the kid has just begun to hold and move the pencil to form letters, but as they grow up, they lose interest and are basically more annoyed when they are required to fill in their homework books. Since that becomes an ordeal, parents get quite worried when they find their kids not wanting to write at all beyond what is unavoidable, that is their homework assignments. Through a bit of planning and patience it is easy for parents to help their children cultivate and develop the love for writing. Here are few simple pointers:

Teach Your Kid to Write Early

The ability of the kids to read and write is intertwined, as observed from several studies. When the kids are encouraged and taught to write the letters that he has just learnt to read, his learning becomes complete and thus more effective. Reading and writing complement each other. So, if from the very childhood, parents are patient and persistent with the kid so that he is not hesitant or tries to avoid writing, you will find that the kid is able to write with ease in his later years as well. Childhood educators these days suggest a phonetic writing procedure for kids.

Ensure the Right Building Blocks

An environment that is rich in language also aids in the development of the writing skills in the child. There are numerous games and activities available that focus on building and enhancing vocabulary of the child. The fun word games are very helpful as well. As the child gets to learn more and more words, his writing depth will grow and he will also develop an interest in writing per se. There can be other building blocks like checking the child’s homework for spelling and punctuation and capitalisation errors. It helps the child to rework and re-learn whatever he has learnt in school.

The Opportunity to Write is Important

Writing should be fun and a spontaneous activity. So make sure that you provide the kid with proper tools that he will instantly like. For example, provide him with pencils, pen and paper that have a certain fun element in it. A drab sheet of paper and a worn out pencil may not be appealing to a kid who is already not interested in writing. So perhaps a writing book with an interesting cover will appeal to his imagination and arouse the interest to use the book. Apart from stationery, writing on cute note pads or writing letters to relatives and friends can also build this habit of writing in children. Encourage the kid to maintain a journal for family trips and visits to new places.

Finally, with all basic and procedural practices in place, it is also important that the kid sees you involved in the reading and writing activity. Remember, kids take a cue on what to do from their immediate environment. The oral composition is another great way of teaching elementary writing and enhancing writing skills.

Encourage and help the kid to talk about the subject that he is going to write. Then ask him to put those words on paper or if you choose, you can also go in for a dictation practice. In either way, the writing skill will be encouraged. And yes, make sure that you appreciate the writing effort and not be simply critical in the first place. Your kid requires encouragement, big time.

I have taught the habit of recording thoughts and feelings in a journal. Every kid should develop this idea. It is very interesting to read journal entries about the classmates, classrooms, every little detail that he writes about Orchids School events.
