Feeding kids is very important aspect of parenting. By the age of two your child should be able to finish three meals every day along with one or two snacks. Encouraging child to eat with the family right from early childhood is a must. This will help to boost her interest in eating and help her to develop healthy eating habits.
Right nutrition plays a very important role in the healthy growth and development of children. Therefore, it is a must to take right precautions while cooking and feeding children. Let us take a look at some beneficial cooking and feeding tips.

  • Washing hands before and after meals should be encouraged.
  • Do not be rigid about how much your child should eat. Let your child decide how much to eat.
  • Children who do not eat enough at a time should be offered food every 2-3 hours. However, do not force your child to eat.
  • Encourage the child to eat with a spoon or with his own fingers.
  • Keep junk food out of the sight of children.
  • Follow a proper feeding schedule.
  • Have meals together as a family.
  • Keep fresh fruits handy and give them to your children when they ask for something to eat between the meals.
  • Make sure that you avoid foods that are likely to cause choking.
  • Include foods from all groups in your child’s diet.
  • Focus on including healthy foods in the diet of your child.
  • Be a good role model for your child.

Cooking Tips

Take a quick look at some helpful cooking tips.
  1. Use less of sugar, salt and refined flour (maida or all-purpose flour) preparations.
  2. Unpolished rice or par-boiled rice is better than polished rice.
  3. Do not overcook vegetables, they lose their nutritive value.
  4. Do not cook fruits since the essential vitamin C is lost.
  5. The skin of many vegetables is rich in vitamins and minerals, so offer fresh fruits to the child with their skins.
  6. Wherever possible, use jaggery instead of sugar, since it is very high in iron.
  7. Avoid adding too much spice or oil.
  8. Use Ghee while cooking instead of oil wherever possible.
  9. Make sure that you follow hygiene while cooking for your children.
  10. Always serve freshly cooked food to your children.
  11. Avoid cooking using instant food packets or ready meals for your children.
  12. Cook using traditional methods of cooking.
  13. Avoid putting food colours to your child’s meals.
When you are cooking for your children, you must avoid sticking to the same old recipes. You can do a little research to make new food items in order to help your child develop interest in food and eating. There is variety of healthy food items that you can prepare for your children for meals as well as for snacks.
Make meals colourful by using colourful vegetables while preparing meals. Make sure that you check the labels before adding any ingredient to your child’s meals. Always buy seasonal fruits and vegetables. Clean the chopping boards and knives properly after using them. Use clean kitchen towels for wiping spoons and plates of your child. And last but not the least buy cutlery of interesting shapes and sizes for your children to make the meal time more fun.
