If your child has diarrhoea then proper foods should be given to control the motions. Rice kanji and sugar, salt and water solution are ideal for child who has diarrhoea. Here we have given the method for preparation of rice kanji and the solution. This solution should be taken frequently to prevent dehydration.

Rice Kanji

Boil little water and add 30 grams (or a handful) of rice powder to make the solution into a thin liquid. Add one level teaspoon of salt and water to this liquid to make it up to 1 litre.

Water, Sugar and Salt Solution

This solution is an essential medicine for diarrhoea. It is necessary for adults as well as children and infants. After preparing the solution, make sure that you taste it. The solution should not taste too salty. Add lime juice (sour/sweet) or orange juice to taste. Some children prefer to have this solution without orange juice.
Keep this solution in a refrigerator or cold place. Make fresh solution after 24 hours. Wherever possible, boil the water and cool it before adding salt and sugar. Once the solution is ready, do not boil it.
Adults

Children
For 1 litre of water, add 3/4 teaspoon of salt and 8 level teaspoons of sugar. Mix and taste.
Infants
For 1 litre of water, add 3/4 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of sugar. Mix and taste.

Other Foods

Since your child is suffering from diarrhoea, it is necessary to include foods that help to bind the stools. There are certain grains and fruits that help in hardening the stools of children when included in their diet. Such foods are very good for helping them cope with diarrhoea. Let us take a look at the foods that can help in bulking of child’s stools in diarrhoea.
  • Banana
  • Applesauce
  • Rice
  • Curd
  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Potato
The above mentioned foods should be given to babies to whom solids are already introduced. Make sure that these foods are properly mashed before they are given to the baby in order to avoid choking hazard. For making applesauce you need to peal apples and boil or steam them until they become tender. You can then put these cooked tender pieces of apple in a blender and blend it into a puree. You must consult your child’s doctor before your give the above mentioned foods to your baby while he or she is coping with diarrhoea.

Foods to Be Avoided

When your baby is suffering from diarrhoea you must avoid giving foods that are known to cure constipation. For example, you must avoid giving fruits like peaches, plums, pears, prunes, apricots etc, during this time. You must also avoid giving foods which have higher fibre content. Although, applesauce can help in binding stools, apple juice can do the opposite. Therefore, you must also avoid giving apple juice to your baby, when he or she is coping with diarrhoea. As applesauce is given as it contains a good amount of pectin which helps in bulking stools. Also, dairy products, except for curd should be avoided in children coping with diarrhoea.
Diarrhoea can be very stressful for babies and therefore, right measures should be taken to help them deal with it. It is a must to get the baby examined by a paediatrician and follow his or her advice.
