Exercises for Depression in Children

Exercises help children to alleviate the common symptoms of depression. Exercises promote positive outlook in life by improving the self esteem, thereby curing depression. Read on to know the benefits of exercises for depression in children.

Regular exercises and physical activity is found to bring about a considerable improvement is self esteem. Low self esteem, fatigue, loss of interest in any activity and sleeplessness are some of the most common symptoms of depression in children. These can be effectively countered with regular exercises.

Effect of Exercises on Body

There is a natural and automatic release of a chemical known as Endorphin when the body exercises. They interact with the brain receptors and lessen the feeling of pain, and induce and feeling of joy and the mind too turns more active. The positive feeling, that the body experience thereof is akin to the effect of morphine. This is why there is a boost of energy and a feel-good factor that is common after a brisk workout session.

A simple instance, ask your kid who is suffering from depression to take a run or go for a jog in the early morning fresh air and after he returns, he will say that there is sure a positivity in it, he will experience what is commonly termed as the ‘runner’s high’. Such feelings bring about a positive outlook in life as well.

Apart from acting as analgesic, endorphins also do the work of sedatives. Endorphins are released from other parts of the body along with the spinal cord and brain. This is mostly in response to neurotransmitters the brain chemicals.

Benefits of Exercise for Coping with Depression

When your kid or adolescent is suffering from depression, regular exercise can prove to be safer, more beneficial and effective compared to clinical therapies. However, your physician is the best judge to identify whether it is essential for your child to be on medication or not. But exercises are a great way to keep the body fit and mind more active and alert. Given below are some of the benefits of exercise:

  • Anxiety, tension and nervousness are the common symptoms of depression. They can be easily reduced and prevented with regular exercise.
  • Stress is reduced; the child becomes calmer and patient.
  • Self esteem is enhanced as the child becomes more comfortable with his own self.
  • Child gets a better sleep at night which helps him to wake fresh and happy. Irritability ensuing from lack of or disturbed sleep is also lessened and gradually disappears.
  • With an alert mind, and a healthier body, his concentration levels too are improved.
  • Not to forget the positive effects exercise has on overall circulation and functioning of the heart.
  • The muscles gets toned and strengthened.
  • Exercise helps in the development of bones too and reduces the build up of body fat.
  • All these factors bring about a marked improvement in the appearance of the child too. He feels happy with his look and body and this increases his confidence.

The Exercises those are Helpful for Your Child

You must always decide on the exercise type and regimen after consulting with your doctor and a trained fitness expert on what are ideal for your kid. Given below are some common and simple exercises that are beneficial to the mind and body –

  • Brisk walking.
  • Jogging at a moderate pace.
  • Swimming.
  • Dancing.
  • Low impact aerobics.
  • Sports that require movement like football, baseball, basketball, tennis, cricket, badminton, etc.

Finally, even if the child initially desists from exercising, you need to be patient with him or her. Usually in depression, the child tries to stay away from any activity. It works best if you counsel him and enrol him with a training group. It has been found that exercises when done in groups increase involvement and makes the person more motivated. So, a positive support from parents is also necessary.
