Common Skin Problems during Pregnancy

Common Skin Problems during Pregnancy

Skin changes are common during pregnancy and at the same time skin problems can also be experienced during this phase. Read on to learn about the common skin problems that may arise during pregnancy.

While a glowing face is a welcoming sign for various expectant mothers, one cannot deny the existence of various skin issues that accompany pregnancy. Thinning of the hair on head, unusual growth in some areas, dark blotches are just a few examples of the skin conditions during pregnancy. Not that the beautiful radiance is missing during pregnancy, but along with that comes a diverse set of skin conditions that can be sometimes difficult to put up with. Discussed below are various skin conditions, both good and bad that accompany an expectant mother.

The Secret behind That Glowing Skin

The first news of pregnancy in many cultures is celebrated with an expectant mothers’ glowing skin. While this is also a housewife tradition in many cultures, the condition has a firm biological basis. The pregnancy causes increase in the volume of blood, and hence many blood vessels collect below the skin on the face, thus giving the face its radiance. The increased heart rate, which can also occur due to excitement in normal circumstances, is normal during pregnancy, and causes the blushing of the face.

The Facial Cloak during the Pregnancy Period

During the second trimester of the pregnancy period, many women find themselves gazing towards their patchy yellowish or brownish skin in the mirror. The condition is defined as chloasma. The skin is affected mainly in areas of the forehead, nose, and chin. Chloasma cannot be avoided as its origin lies in the pregnancy hormones known as estrogen and progesterone, but its intensity can be lowered if one reduces their exposure to ultra-violet light.

Return of the Pimple Days

With the termination of college, many women conveniently believe that the days of acne are behind them. However, pregnancy brings back acne, though in a less severe form. The effects of acne wear off shortly after conception. During this condition, women are required to attend to their skin through natural cleansing methods. However, use of very strong medicines or remedies is not recommended as it can cause harm to the baby as well as to the mother.

The Origin of Linea Nigra

Also known as the white line, a faint linea Alba runs from the navel to the centre of their pubic bone. This faint white line slowly transforms into a much darker line during the second trimester of the pregnancy and is then known as the Linea Nigra. The line disappears several months after conception.

The Darkening of the Dark Areas

The little moles and freckles that were there before pregnancy might just increase in intensity during the pregnancy period. The brown spots grow darker during the pregnancy period, accompanied by the darkening of the nipples on the breasts, and intensifying of the moles. The insides of your feet and your palms can also adopt a shade that is reddish blue due to the consistent itching. This condition is called Erythema and has nothing alarming about its presence.

Skin Tags and Heat Rash

Usually found under the arms, between neck folds, or under the breast lines, the rubbing of the skin against the clothing, or against the skin itself is common during pregnancy. These areas are known as polyps, or skin tags. These are caused by hyperactive growth of the superficial layer beneath the skin. Pregnancy also causes a change in the body temperature. This rise in temperature causes intense rashes which can be quite irritating for any expectant mother. The ultimate consequence of these rashes is itching, commonly seen in all pregnant women.

It is important to understand that skin changes are inevitable during pregnancy. While a few conditions can be alarming for many expectant mothers, there is no reason to be skeptical about them. Pregnancy causes the body to change in many ways, and hence these skin changes should be understood as a part of that transformation.
