Anyone who's ever had a baby knows that along with the fun and laughter come a whole lot of tears, tantrums and sleepless nights. Your baby keeps waking you up at night, and you find yourself struggling to get forty winks during the day when your baby's not keeping you on your toes. But some lucky mothers have hit upon a perfect solution that keeps their little ones in deep slumber throughout the night.

Can developing a bedtime routine help?

Uday falls asleep when his mother sings him a soft lullaby, so she tried leaving a tape playing through the night... and it worked! But while what works for one baby may not work for another, it just might work for yours!

You need to remember that every single child is different and the sleep patterns too tend to vary. May be she is hungry or maybe she just wants to bond with you.

So hop on and share tips and advice on getting your child to sleep throughout the night.

Do all new mothers have to cope with sleepless nights?

It is very normal for mothers to be worried when their babies are not sleeping well through the night. After all, you had no plans of staying awake after a long and tiring day! However, babies are just babies; they do not know what is expected from them. Some doctors suggest the "cry it out" method to be the most effective in these cases.

In the first place, you need to consider this to be very normal. In fact if you stay away from her most of the time during the day, you can enjoy some feeding time at night together.

What are the benefits of feeding babies at night?

According to many doctors, feeding at night is considered highly beneficial from the nutritional point of view. Your baby feels soothed, comforted, safe and happy when you breastfeed her at night. It is certainly doing a lot of good for her overall development.

You only need to ensure she gets sufficient sleep through the day, as sleep along with food is essential for growth. Teaching her self-soothing methods can be an effective method to help her learn sleep better. You are encouraging wrong habits when you soothe her every time she is awake.

How is the sleeping pattern of babies?

It is normal for the newborns specially to wake up several times at night for milk. Babies learn to sleep through the night after few months.

The developmental pace of your baby shall help her sleep through the long stretches and self soothe herself. Learning to sleep through the night is a developmental milestone that babies attain with time. It is better to wait and not force her to sleep, so that she develops the habit fast.

Adopting a more relaxed approach shall help her sleep better at night. She shall feel more secured to sleep through the night when she develops the habit herself. You too can sleep tight though the night and wake up fresh in the morning.

You need to be realistic and reasonable when you expect her to sleep through the night. Babies are in fact designed to wake up for a feed or cuddle at night. You also need to keep in mind that adults too wake up at night sometimes. When you consider this natural, you shall see most of your problems gone.

Why do babies wake-up at night?

Although we have discussed the reasons why babies wake up at night, here is a summary that you can keep in mind.
  • When baby wants more time with mom.
  • If a nappy or a diaper change is needed.
  • If the baby is hungry.
  • In case of teething problems.
  • When she attains developmental milestones like learning to crawl, walk or run.
  • In case of allergies, eczema, diaper rashes or illness.

These are some of the checklists you can consider when you find her waking up several times at night. If you think there is some other underlying problems for her waking up at night, you can always bring it up to your doctor.

You need to remember waking up at night is just a temporary developmental phase and shall not last long. As she grows, you can again enjoy peaceful sleep at night. So, for the time being, you need to respect requirements of your growing child and ignore the difficulties of staying awake.

You can always look for help if you think you are highly sleep deprived. A happy mum definitely leads to a happy family.
